With A Three-Pronged Plan, Trump Planned To Topple Democracy
From late December to the violent culmination of events on January 6, the Trump White House engaged in a multi-pronged effort to topple the United States government.
By Hunter

There is nothing that needs teasing out, here. The Trump White House plan was in full view. Donald Trump and his top allies engaged in a multi-pronged, extended, pre-plotted campaign to overthrow the next constitutionally appointed U.S. presidency by falsely claiming the election was invalid; by pressuring the Department of Justice to issue statements further casting doubt on the election's integrity; by calling key election officials and asking them to change reported vote totals on Trump's behalf; by using conspiratorial claims to gather a mob of enraged would-be "patriots" convinced that direct action was needed to "stop the steal" from happening; by asking that crowd to march the Capitol; by rebuffing efforts, during the mob's attack, to call off the now-violent mob.
It was an act of plain sedition, pre-planned and premeditated and orchestrated from inside Trump's own inner circle. It was backed by a majority of House Republicans, multiple of which were in communication with Trump and dozens of whom were allied with the effort to falsely dispute the election's results.
Donald Trump and his top aides engaged in a multipart plan to overthrow the United States government so as to retain power. Put that in your head and let it stew there, because there's simply no denying that it's true.
The new notes from the Department of Justice represent, by themselves, an act of official corruption easily besting Nixon's worst. Asking the Department of Justice to falsely cast doubts on the integrity of a U.S. election that booted you from power is by itself an act that would demand impeachment, if Senate Republicans were not themselves so corrupt as to have allied with the idea. Calling a Georgia election official to ask that official to "find" new votes is a demand that should yet land Trump in prison for a decade or longer. Pointedly ignoring lawmakers asking for assistance as his enraged allies broke through windows and sought out his enemies is the stuff of terrorism, not mere corruption.
It is the three-pronged plan that elevates Trump and his top Republican allies from merely corrupt to outright seditionists. It was a plan intended to erase a U.S. presidential election. It sought out allies in the Department of Justice who would publicly discredit the election, allies in state governments who would change the vote totals, and a public mob that would disrupt the vote count and intimidate public officials into approving a Trump return to power.
It was all one plan, not three. Discredit the election using false claims; use the same false claims to stoke a public anger deep enough to justify tossing out the rule of law, in the name of restoring "order."
It was an attempted fascist takeover, and many of its top orchestrators are still featured prominently on the Sunday news shows. Parts of it came very close to succeeding; had different Republican officials been in different offices, it seems quite possible now that Trump's White House could have found state or county allies willing to alter votes in the manner they were requested. Parts of it were seemingly asinine, inventions of deranged and desperate minds; one has a hard time believing that a congressional declaration that Trump was "somehow" still president would be treated as legitimate by the press, the military, or the public at large, if the declaration had come from lawmakers being literally held hostage by a mob demanding they do so.
It was still an attempt, though. Trump and others within the White House engaged in weeks of effort in attempts to enlist both accomplices within government and a paramilitary force outside it. Trump is a traitor to his country. Any outcome that does not see him rotting in prison for his acts will itself be an affront to our would-be democracy.

(1,107 posts)but if something like this happens I'm on a plane from Spokane and I will be in DC to fight back.
I took an oath when I enlisted in the Coast Guard to "protect and defend" our nation from all enemies foreign and domestic. When I left active duty no one released me from that oath. My dad risked his life and won the Silver Star in Europe defending this nation from fascism. He set the bar for me and I will not let him down.
Sure don't want to have to do but I most certainly will if this happens again. I'm no hero but the thought of dishonoring my father's memory by my inaction or cowardice is something I simply would not be able to live with.

But I don't think that the next step will be a physical one. It will be political, in several different states when Republican legislatures and election officials throw out Dem votes or overturn elections into their favor.
At that point, we will be the ones saying the outcomes were fraudulent and will be challenging them. How far will we go in our objections? What will we do about such an obvious steal of seats in Congress to give Republicans a majority rule?
Will we fight in the courts? Refuse to acknowledge the outcome? Take to the streets in the relevant states? Better think about it now, ahead of time, because unless the laws allowing Republicans to overturn elections are shot down before the 2022 midterms, we will face election fraud and voter disenfranchisement in several states this midterm.

(10,078 posts)The first trial assault will be in close Senate races in 2022. Republican legislatures will target Democratic counties (like Fulton in Georgia) and throw out just enough votes for Warnock for the Republican to win. And there does our majority unless we can pick up Ohio and perhaps Wisconsin. The Wisconsin legislature already wants a fraudit of 2020 and if I recall correctly they got rid of the people who certified the election for Biden, so theyre primed to steal that Senate seat also.
Assuming their tactics work in 2022, the big prize of 2024 will be accomplished by refusing to certify voters slate of electors by claiming extensive voter fraud and choosing their own slate of electors. If they have control of both houses of Congress, they will vote to certify the alternative slates of electors for the EC and we will have a Republican presidenta bloodless coup.
And absolutely lawsuits would be filed to try to stop this, but I still remember Florida and the SC handing the presidency to Bush. I have no faith that todays even more right-wing SC would do anything about Republicans stealing elections. And if Congress votes to certify, would the SC overturn that vote?

(21,611 posts)in the ongoing coup. It will be a battle at the polls and in the courts rather than a physical fight. But if people protest, as they probably will, Trump's paramilitary thugs would also show up. In red states, where the National Guard and police forces are infiltrated by militias, I expect that there would be some very harsh putdowns of protests against vote disenfranchisement.

(46,082 posts)We can guess pretty much who most of them are. But if it could be proved, I would guess even Republicans would vote to get them out of office. Of course, that would depend on there being enough Republican non-allies to accomplish that.
If they run for re-election, even if proven guilty, their voters would vote for them, anyway. Sad.

(47,602 posts)that some will be identified and hopefully held accountable. With all the multiple 1/6 investigations going on, it would be pretty hard for all his accomplices to keep a low profile.
I agree that their voters wouldn't care if they are found guilty. Everyday in MAGA world is opposite day now.

(25,270 posts)This is not over yet. That's why the 1/6 Investigation must succeed and reveal the whole cabal - which needs to be held accountable.
Unless and until that happens we are all still in peril of losing our democracy.
How many of TFG's people are still embedded in our government and are working to achieve his goal?

(81,489 posts)I know lots of us are not in a position to do much, but for those of us who DO have the time, inclination, and opportunity, it behooves us to try to do something.
Now, frankly, Im one who does have time to get active on things like this. For me, its mainly my local Indivisible group. It is active! The core group (team leaders) is active. We do stuff, meet on Zoom every week, work up our Call to Action email every week, write postcards to reps and to voters, tons of stuff! FAR less, of course, in the last year as we all have endured. But there are these folks up here who are determined to make some noise.
Little things can be done. A quick call to a Senator or Rep isnt too taxing or is too long, and all youd have to do is ask to pass S.1. Just look at it this way: whatever you might do (if possible), thats ONE MORE THING that got done for the greater good than there was before you did one small thing. Heck, theres even a group called One Small Thing!
Just some thoughts. I push for mandates but Im not able to impose one myself.

This is exactly why nuking the filibuster -- just a rule -- will be nothing compared to the health that elections will regain when the wealthy, vicious, self serving liars are gone and can't nullify one-man-one-vote democracy.

(3,631 posts)He has been overreaching and failing to understand his own resources and limitations since he drove his casino empire into the ground in the 1980's. He mistakes boldness for genius, both in himself and others, even when it is stupid. He overestimates his ability to control other people and his own charisma.
He has supporters, but not enough to stage a coup. He has supporters in the military, but not the leaders. He felt out the leaders and was told in no uncertain terms not to expect their cooperation. Going forward after that was just stupid, but perhaps after the "dopes and babies" harangue he delivered in the Tank when they tried to educate him about world affairs, he believed his own assessment and didn't believe they would do anything to stop him if he managed to do enough damage to the civilian side of the government.
On that I'm quite sure he would have been wrong.
It was always iffy that he had enough support to disrupt the transfer of power in any case. He could have probably created a lot of trouble, but Biden would still have been sworn in on Jan 20 even if they had to do it on Air Force One because DC was in lockdown, and the military would then have followed Biden which pretty much seals things up. Could have been ugly but there really was no path to final victory for him. There would not have been a civil war because we no longer have a convenient geographic separation between the would-be sides.
TFG also always sells out and betrays his partners and allies in the end, and would only have ever stuck with the plan itself until it was clear he needed to distance himself from any developing consequences. And once that happened the whole thing would quickly fall apart no matter how far it had gotten.

(1,544 posts)The Trump coup failed on Jan 6 -- but only temporarily.
Trump is still very much alive, in touch with his fellow plotters, and raising a lot of money.
Trump's enablers are still there -- roaming around, in Congress, in state houses across the country.
They will learn from Jan 6 and will not make the same mistakes next time.
It's coming again.

he did this when he barely
