The 600-Word InterviewIt seems as if your theory of Trump is that he's a not-bright insane person with a gift for reading a crowd.
Yes. He's like many actors I have known in my time: not too bright in their own particular reality, with extraordinary gifts for getting on the wavelength of their audience.
Does he know that he lost the election fair and square?
He does not know. Now, whether he has managed to successfully convince himself or whether from the get-go he was so focused on hearing what he wanted to hear, he is absolutely certain. Absolutely certain that he won the election and that if he did not win it, it could only be that it was stolen from him. And that everybody else also sees it that way. So this is delusional, which is the word I use fairly often in the book.

That's what he can't or won't let himself believe.

(16,856 posts)that even when it looks like he does lose, it's really a win. What reality is to Trump is sort of a meaningless question, because reality as most people see it means nothing to him. Reality changes for him minute by minute, and the past changes along with it to suit his desires. He's one fucked-up dude, but he has a handle on what about 30% of Americans are thinking and their wishes for the future. They're fucked up people, too, living on a diet of sugar and trash television. The best hope for all of us might be that Covid will wipe a lot of them out and give the rest of them a dose of reality, the reality that the rest of us experience.
