Stopping This Pandemic Is Like Plugging Holes In A Dike......

As soon as one hole is plugged - another one opens up - and so on.

This is because we're all doing something different to deal with this pandemic.

You have 50 states doing their own thing.

You have maskers and anti-maskers.

You have vaxxers and anti-vaxxers.

People traveling from a hot spot in the country - to one that has things reasonably under control - and the Covid breaks out again.

You have mutations of the virus.

You have super-spreader events (i.e., Lollapoolooza; Sturgis; etc) where people throw caution to the wind.

You have Repugs turning this into a political football (i.e., let people get Covid - it'll make Biden look bad).

You have all this going on and as soon as those that do the right thing to take control - you have people doing just the opposite.

You have people wanting very badly to get back to a pre-pandemic normal. Get back to work. Get back to eating at restaurants. Get back to vacations. Get back to school. etc, etc, etc.

We rush things and we keep making the same mistakes as we expect different results.

I don't know if we'll ever get this under control.

isn't it clear we will be living with these viruses - super-viruses? - forever?

I believe it is related to the climate collapse. Earth's sytems over-stressed. I am not alone in this theory.

Mother Nature has a way of reminding us who is really in charge.

On edit: maybe it will "help" for society - globally - to just chill out, stay closer to home, reduce demands on earth's system. I, for one, am sad about this. Have entered retirement age and anticipated traveling overseas and to other cultures! There is a lot of value in that, but perhaps it is off the table for now...

With a falling birth rate, maybe it will happen

There was no chance at stopping it. We can slow it down, we can try to prevent overloaded healthcare systems, we can lessen symptoms and improve treatments with pharmaceuticals. But the fact is corona virii are contagious and they mutate.

Front Page story:

Hospitals Overflowing
Covid-19 Surge Straining Local Capacity

(I can attest to that - my planned surgery for tomorrow morning has been postponed indefinitely. Damn.)

And then on the Op-Ed page, a LTE claiming that the vaccines are worthless and the only thing that will put the virus under control is "natural immunity".

The best case scenario is that through vaccines, natural immunity, and people who are highly susceptible to covid dying off, we'll eventually reach a point where most of the population has some degree of resistance and covid will become yet another of the common cold causing coronavirus variants. Covid will be with humanity till the end I'm afraid to say.
