DENVER (AP) When the delta variant started spreading, Gina Welch decided not to take any chances: She got a third, booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by going to a clinic and telling them it was her first shot.
The U.S. government has not approved booster shots against the virus, saying it has yet to see evidence they are necessary. But Welch and an untold number of other Americans have managed to get them by taking advantage of the nations vaccine surplus and loose tracking of those who have been fully vaccinated.
Welch, a graduate student from Maine who is studying chemical engineering, said she has kept tabs on scientific studies about COVID-19 and follows several virologists and epidemiologists on social media who have advocated for boosters.
Im going to follow these experts and Im going to go protect myself, said Welch, a 26-year-old with asthma and a liver condition. Im not going to wait another six months to a year for them to recommend a third dose....

(41,172 posts)but jumping the line I dunno. Pharmacies aren't asking if you've already been vaxxed, haven't officials anticipated this happening? Will fines be imposed, or stricter record keeping?

(65,191 posts)We have a vax lottery here. No need to enter.
Everybody in the database was automatically entered for the cash prizes.
So, in this state they would seem to know who had their vax & who hasn't.

(41,172 posts)the status of many people was checked out by the pharmacy before the vax was administered to them.
I don't know how the woman in this article got past that, and in thinking about it my RX probably searched me too. At the time I was so concerned about getting the first doses I didn't observe their measures that closely.

(65,191 posts)My wife & I got our vaxxes in different counties.
Because I wasn't yet 65, I didn't qualify under phase 1b. (She did).
But, I substitute in both counties & the regional office od education in the county to our west texted me wanting to know if I wanted to be on the teacher list. So, I was eligible for phase 1b that way.
To expedite things, I took my wife to the big city in our county (around 170,000 people), but I drove to the other county a few days later.
So, being excited about getting one's shots is something we completely understand.

(22,020 posts)I had Pfizer and would be eager to get a booster.
See mention that two people said they will be needed by the end of the month.
Pressure to get them available fast is mounting.
