If someone is saying that 1+1 equals 2

And someone else is claiming the answer is 5…why does the person with the 2 answer have to hear out and understand the person with the 5 answer…..that’s what I feel our state of politics are right now…Democrats are saying the answer is two and Republicans are saying five, and the media is saying both sides and we need to compromise, and that we need to hear both sides of the argument.

By turning everything into a “culture wars” issue and “we need to hear both sides”, the Republicans have political capital.

Empiricism, logic, and objectivity are not on their side, so they need to be justified subjectively.

"If a man will continue to insist two plus two make five, I know of nothing in the power of argument to stop up his mouth."

And you're right. How much do we have to patiently listen to them explain why 5 is the answer and empathize with their reasons?

"I understand. 5 is a good number! And it makes sense that you would think it's the answer to every math problem! After all, al those people on FB have done the research and say they have the proof. And I know you had a math teacher once who lied and said 50% is the same as one half, and well, it is understandable that you no longer trust math people."

And an hour later? "Yes, I do understand that Euclid was a long time ago compared to that guy who was Trump's golf caddy. But ...."

Is it really worth it?

doesn't matter how absurd any argument is. They present their side. If a state were to pass legislation declaring 1+1=5, and that anyone stating otherwise would face fines, or imprisonment, what would the news report? It wouldn't be 1+1=2, without also mentioning five as equally plausible, and those they'd be interviewing would be the 5 supporters. The 5 supporters would be 'pro-5', while the '2' supporters would be anti-5.
