Poll: 55 percent of voters approve of Biden, 47 percent approve of Harris

A majority of voters approve of the job Joe Biden is doing as president while Vice President Harris' support is underwater, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds.

Fifty-five percent of registered voters in the Aug. 4-5 survey said they approve of President Biden's performance in the White House while 40 percent disapprove and 5 percent said neither. Forty-seven percent of voters said they approve of Harris as vice president while 43 percent said they disapprove and 10 percent said neither.

One-quarter of voters said they strongly approve of Biden as President while 17 percent said the same of Harris as vice president.

Ninety-three percent of Democratic voters said they approve of Biden's job in the White House along with 54 percent of independents and 17 percent of Republicans. Eighty-three percent of Democratic voters said they approve of Harris as vice president along with 45 percent of independents and 14 percent of Republicans.

All this Harris is unpopular chatter I’ve heard seems new to me. I don’t recall polling about Pencd, or Biden, or Cheney.

It may be that the pollsters expect Harris to run one day. Cheney was basically not going to run for President. Pence came off as little more than a boot licker. Harris has presence that neither of the other two had.

Now that I think of it, I vaguely remember voter polls on President Biden when he was VP, likely because there was a strong assumption that he would run for the top job, that was until his grief over Beau Biden’s death sidelined him.

The most unpopular vice president (full-term) in modern history was Richard B. Cheney, but at this point in 2001 he was well above-water.

Al Gore was also in strongly positive territory in mid-1993. Biden, as vice president, was still above-water in mid-2009.

Before Cheney, Dan Quayle was the modern vice president people most derided. At this point in 1989, Quayle was less unpopular than Pence and Harris, with a Washington Post-ABC News poll showing his approval rating at 43 percent and his disapproval at just 22 percent.
The same poll showed just 38 percent of people said Quayle was qualified to assume the presidency, while 52 percent said he was not.

I didn't actively dislike Dan Quayle as much as I scorned him for being so... Dan Quayle. He didn't seem like an especially bad person, just not very bright given his circumstances.

Why I didn't think of Dick Cheney immediately is beyond me. Maybe it comes from realizing that many years have passed since his crimes and he will never be brought to account, so thinking about him is wasted time.

That was a little before my time. My memories only go back as far as LBJ after he became president. Little did anyone realize, when Nixon was VP...
