Memories of Pelosi
No Democrat in DC is More Determined and Indomitable in a Clutch
--snip--
At a press conference a week after Browns victory, reporters pressed her on how she proposed to salvage the legislation whatever her resistance to the scaled down approach. As I said to some friends yesterday in the press, she replied, we will go through the gate. If the gate is closed, we will go over the fence. If the fence is too high, we will pole vault in. If that doesnt work, we will parachute in. But we are going to get health care reform passed for the American people
And that she did. The President signed the Affordable Care Act on March 23rd, 2010.
Critics of Pelosi would note that the ACA was itself incomplete and imperfect. They would certainly be correct. Theyd also note that what I am describing here as a feat of strength and determination involved forcing her more progressive House caucus to accept the Senates stingier version of the legislation. They would be correct about that too. But she was insisting on scrapping her own version too.
Reality is never simple or pretty. But at clutch moments no one in DC is more determined and indomitable than Nancy Pelosi. Shes steamroll the Gottheimers of her caucus with little exertion or concern.

(31,052 posts)After the first impeachment, with a stern look and a flip of a small piece of paper, it was masterful. Mother of five
Like a stern nun at a Catholic school. It was great.
I think she will be acknowledged as the greatest Speaker in modern history. A lotta people talk about Tip, but a lot of that was get-along go-along. What we're seeing is real power and shrewdness.

(53,866 posts)54% of Dems planning ot vote for no recall. With Dems outnumbering republicans by more than two-to-one, that still favors Newsom.
I don't get too excited by polls as results can be manipulated by whatever the quesitons are and how they're asked.
I mean seriously, this is a by-mail election. Every voter gets a ballot by mail. People don't even have to go to the polls. They just have to make a check mark on a two-question ballot, drop it in the mailbox and they're done. I doubt only 38% of Dem voters are willing to take that effort to keep a Democratic governor.

(10,206 posts)Rep Pelosi is top on my list. It was a privilege to be ensconced next to her for 5+ hours on a Virgin America flight from SFO to DCA. I kept my cool and only spoke with her when we landed, to express my deep appreciation for her and to tell her that this was my biggest thrill since I shook Bobby Kennedy's hand back in the 60s.

(58,785 posts)Pelosi was committed to finally making it happen for America. No surprise that the house's version of the ACA was about as excellent as a bill like that could be when it and the senate version went to reconciliation and the Republicans got involved. And she did make it happen, though bringing national healthcare to America cost 63 Democratic house seats, and her own speakership, in the next election.
Far from "scrapping her own version," Pelosi is the reason as much of it survived as did. Over the 2-year battle to get it passed, senate Democrats and President Obama came to fear it might not pass at all and at one point seriously considered slashing it back to what they thought they could get through. Pelosi went to Obama and told him that congress would pass the version the House had approved, or nothing. She won, and so we did too.
