General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forumsthe fucked up state of Texas...
we have a gov that bans a mask/vaxx mandate yet has one of the highest current outbreaks in the nation.
we have a power grid not connected to the rest of the nation that is in dire need of upgrading but the gov makes sure he gets his donation money from the power companies without actually fixing the grid.
we have a gov that is actively suppressing voting and is trying to pass a bill to make the repubs have a lock forever on power.
we have a very brave group of state Democratic senators who are out of state to prevent a quarum on that same voting bill
and now a texas judge has overruled a lower courts ruling and states that, yes, the Dems can be arrested.
we have a AG that is a felon and has yet to serve a day in jail.
just a few of the highlights from my fucked up state.
fellow Texans, feel free to add your own.

We sympathize with what you must endure on a minute by minute basis.

(16,093 posts)Is there a law in Texas that allows the arrest of members of the state legislature?
TxGuitar
(4,209 posts)But by "arrest" they mean deputies (or whatever) will pick them up (arrest) and take them to the House chamber to force a quorum. Not jail time as far as I know, although being in a room with those cretins would be just as bad.
It's a civil summons - with no criminal liability. Part of the reason why they can't go out of state to pull anyone in.

(28,272 posts)...prepared to keep everything you listed in effect for well into future. That's exactly what will happen unless we take decisive action to get our people to the polls, regardless of the impediments that the trump worshippers put in our way. It can be done, but it sure as hell won't be easy.

And I'd point out that all this fuckery does not represent the opinions or preferences of the majority of Texans, who are much more reasonable.
soldierant
(6,921 posts)who are reasonable need to get out and vote reason into the state government.
Abbott is proof that the majority of Texas voters are not reasoable - or at the very least, not as reasonable as they think they are. You can't gerrymander the governorship.

(2,608 posts)The only focus for Abbott and his clown car is to make life so difficult that voters will blame President Biden and Abbot can take the White House. Killing tens of thousands of his fellow Texans is just, well necessary .

(10,497 posts)after their 30 plus years in total power over the state. Just think of all of the self dealing that has gone on during the time they have had complete control of all of state government.
We are screwed with the coming gerrymandering and voting restrictions. They cannot afford to lose!

I'm truly sorry your state is so whacked out. If we don't pass some voting protection laws it's going to be even worse, if that's possible.

(6,699 posts)That was one of the scariest drives I've had in a long time this past July. I'm originally from up in the Pacific Northwest.... Portland Vancouver area.... and our outdated highways are nothing to brag about at all..... but they crawl along at 5 miles an hour. Going through El Paso in July was downright scary. It wasn't rush-hour but the highway was plugged with trucks and cars in every lane, racing 60 70 miles an hour in narrow stretches through El Paso.
That was one road I plan to avoid in the future...if possible.
Point is, Texas can certainly use the infrastructure bill to address some of their interstate outdated roads.
