One of the myths about Joe McCarthy...

I watched a documentary several months ago about Joe McCarthy, his rise and fall.

One of the myths about McCarthy is that after his censure by the Senate, he died in disgrace.

He didn't.

He did die after drinking himself to death, but his funeral was a grand event, with his body lying in state.

At the funeral, he was celebrated, and is still being celebrated by prominent right-wing groups and people.

There will be no statues of him.

He died of cirrhosis of the liver in 1957, at 48, and his name already had become a byword, “McCarthyism,” for smear campaigns, malicious and unfounded.

McCarthy, James Wechsler wrote that year in the New York Post, was a “creature of a time of national frenzy and frustration.”
