Florida records thousands of new COVID-19 cases; districts report deaths of teachers, quarantines

Florida this week reported 20,656 more COVID-19 cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The state also reported 357 new deaths.

Schools are starting to open in the state. Thousands of students returned to their classrooms in Palm Beach County for the first day of school this week. By their second day, hundreds were back at home and in quarantine. As of Friday, 51 people — 37 students and 14 teachers — across more than 20 schools in Palm Beach County School District have been infected with the coronavirus. Officials have requested all students and staff who have come in contact with any of those who have tested positive, an estimated 440 people, to quarantine.

In Broward County, where schools open next week, three teachers and an aide have died in recent days from COVID-19 complications, Anna Fusco, elementary school teacher and Broward Teacher Union President, told CBS4 Miami. Three were unvaccinated, Fusco said. She was not sure whether the fourth person was vaccinated.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order two weeks ago
that said parents could ignore school mask mandates and threatened school districts with a loss of state funding if they adopted them.

I am a Florida teacher that returns next week. I am less afraid for myself (masked and vaxed), but I am terrified for my students and those they come in contact with. They (the unvacinated) work with kids, elderly, and the ill.

I worry my classroom will make things worse.
