It was a war of punishment.

The Taliban refused to hand over Bin Laden so Bush attacked them as punishment.

Perhaps it made sense at the beginning to show some force but it should have stopped soon after.

It turned into a nation building effort which was never meant to be. That’s where they went wrong.

Probably should have been to take that offer and see if they actually delivered Bin Laden. If they turned him over then let them know in no uncertain terms that if any terrorist activity continues we will bomb the hell out of them and send in troops if necessary. At least try a big bad wolf scare campaign first before making a big commitment.

Bush/Cheney and pals in MIC and mining probably saw it as an opportunity to make a lot of money. That's all they care about.
