They probably took the maximum loaded weight of the plane with cargo and crew and divided the weight by the average weight of an evacuee and loaded it up.

The C-17 commonly performs tactical and strategic airlift missions, transporting troops and cargo throughout the world; additional roles include medical evacuation and airdrop duties.

Maximum 77,519 kg (170,900 lbs.) of cargo

Assume they all have it and they add less than 0.1% to our the 7 day average of Covid-19 positive results which are at 200K / day. It will have to get sorted out, along with visa issues, but its way far down on things I would care about if I was part of the Embassy staff.

Simply by virtue of the fact that they chose to leave the country.

Every single person should be given safe harbor. If there was every an asylum case to be made those Afghani's have it. 100%.

"The U.S. and other countries indeed are planning to resettle thousands of Afghans with an estimated 88,000 currently being processed for Special Immigrant Visas for their roles in assisting U.S. forces at great risk to their lives and those of their families."

…calculate load-weight fairly well: weight of fuel and of 800 passengers with no luggage. Judging from the photo they are all in what used to be normal weight range for Americans before McDonalds and Burger King.

So yeah, I’d trust an experienced pilot of a military transport plane.

Man oh man. That’s a lot better than a C-130. Which if you look at the first two rows, it was about that size. So close the Air Force crew would walk across the rucks when in a hurry.

Lots of places to stuff a puke bag in the big one
