Really Ann
You think sending your kids to some mission job somehow is equal to all those parents whose children's lives were altered because they served in a war.
Hell thanks to you Ann I actually have just a tad bit of respect for Sarah Palin because she knows what it's like to have a son serve in the military (Her oldest enlisted).
But you tell Whoopi Goldberg that somehow doing these Mormon missions your 5 boys left as boys and returned as men.
Really
You have no fucking clue
The White House isn't the Versailles Palace and this ain't late 1700s pre-revolution France. You are not Marie Antoinette. It's lovely that you have spent your entire life privileged enough to have stock options to pay for your student loans and enough wealth so you can hire people to raise your kids, clean your houses, mow your lawns and do all that other stuff so you don't have to.
But after reading what you said on 'The View' you and your husband have absolutely NO fucking right to be the Commander-in-Chief of our military because clearly you have no fricking clue the sacrifices that our military families make when they have to serve in a war. Sure you could say the same of Obama, he neither served in the military nor are his daughters old enough to serve. But at least he doesn't have the audacity to some how justify serving in a mormon mission or some other type of church thing as related to what our Military folks have to go thru when serving our country.
And true, these past 2 wars were not done by draft but by a voluntary army. But for many working class families, military sometimes is the only option available to kids who are graduating high school and don't have the money to pay for college or training to get a decent job out of high school.
Mitt was smart to cancel his appearance but he should take his own advice - the less we see of you Ann the better it is for Mitt. We don't want some some couple living in the White House thinking that somehow they are privledged royalty.
And Ann - I hope when you said this was the last campaign that this inclues your 5 sons because I don't think ANYONE wants to see another Romney running for office ever again. Your family offers NOTHING to this country other than lies and deceptions.
Here's the questions that Whoopi asked and btw Whoopi

Why do these Mormons think they have to go around forcing their religion on people?
The poor widdle boyz who come to our door...I really enjoy scaring them. Their eyes get as big as saucers. And I don't see how this 'mission' could in any way turn them into 'men.' They just get used to hearing, 'Go away.'
And the gall of her to think that these 'missions' are in any way the same as what our soldiers have to do endure is just INSANE.
Yes, please keep this woman talking....the Independents and Moderate Republicans will see her and flee to the Dems.

How a family can be here for so long, through so many wars, and not a single veteran in the bunch, is mind boggling.
Willard and his pro war for everyone else but him mentality, and his chicken hawk, cowardly sons who claim to be serving the country by getting their dad elected from the comfort of their multiple homes and millions of dollars worth of creature comforts, are disgusting.

I'm about to mark 5 years of widowhood at age 62. That's after 25 years of full-scale caregiving.
And she has the nerve to talk about "hard"? She equates stupid missions with combat? Her husband and 5 sons are too good to serve, but yet promote the wars for others to serve in?
I wouldn't spit on her if she was on fire. And that phoney inappropriate laugh she does all the time... let's just say I'd like to "meet" with her alone in person sometime and "discuss" it.

(95,337 posts)I'll be honest, I really don't have a true understanding about the sacrifices of war. My grandfather served in WWII in a PT boat. He saw alot of action but not that 'in your face' kind of action one gets when they're on the ground on the front line. My father was Navy but his service was between Korea & Vietnam so he lucked out in regards to serving in a war.
So being in the position I am, I think I'm the last person to think that ANYTHING I may have done in my lifetime can EVER compare to what those who have served our country have done.

My guess is Ann was blindsided by that question. Whoopi is obvious about her support for Obama just as Elizabeth Hasselbeck is for her support of anything GOP. I have a friend who is an ex-Mormon. She told me about this practice and said now anytime missionaries come to her house, she invites them in to talk and turns on her tv to a news channel loud enough so they can't miss hearing it.

BFD, it was preferable to ironing cotton cord uniforms.
Before she got sucked into religious mind warp, Queen Ann probably would have done ok at basic. Her spawn would no doubt crap out during the first quick march tour of the drill pad. When I see the Romneys I actually want to throw up. Their sons certainly take after their father. Nasty, vicious little privileged bastards. They say that eyes are the windows of the soul. Looking into Romney's eyes are like looking into the depths of hell. Who knows though, maybe it is just because I am also a very vile person who doesn't think, in spite of the way it is now promoted as the ultimate in heroism, that being part of the war machine is the greatest way to serve mankind.

(45,319 posts)Mitt actually demonstrated in favor of the Viet Nam naplam dropping, he supported the war, for others to fight. That family is heavily invested in military businesses, and has profited from every war since they got off 'Refugee Benefits' which Mitt's dad was raised on, as a result of their running from the Mexian Revolution.
That family is the worst sort of cog in the war machine, the kind that goes to Paris while others fight the wars they profit from.

I have the impression that Mitt will eagerly send others' sons and daughters to wars he may deem expedient or necessary. He isn't operating out of pacifism, but elitism. (3,596 posts)I don't doubt that one or more of her sons returned from their missions more mature and perhaps "men" from the standpoint of having had to take care of themselves, not to mention face rejection and often hostility by those they are trying to convert.
But for her to equate going on a mission to serving in our military is quite honestly, OFFENSIVE. I have not served in the military but I have the utmost respect for our men and women in uniform and I am thankful to them for their service and their sacrifices.
Some make the ultimate sacrifice by dying for their country. But just as many suffer the sacrifices of placing themselves in harms way, serving on long deployments away from family and friends, often earning less money than they could in the private sector and as a result not being able to offer their families some of the same comforts and opportunities. Our military families make huge sacrifices.
Having been raised around a lot of Mormons they do treat the sending off of their young bright-eyed missionaries as if they were going off to war and welcome them home almost as heroes.
Heaven help us if we end up with her as first lady. As much as I disliked GWB at least Laura Bush generally carried herself with comportment and dignity. The same cannot be said for what we would see from Ann Robme.

(51,574 posts)Whoopi's question was really clever the way she innocently asked if it is against the Mormon religion to fight it war. That is what Ann is suggesting when responding that her sons served on "missions" when asked if her sons ever served in the military. Note Ann never uses the proper name (MORMON missions), in fact the Romney's never use the word Mormon--it's always "my church." In fact, in the second debate, Romney said he was a "pastor" at "his church." There are no pastors in the Mormon church. He was a fucking bishop, but didn't want to use that word to alert voters at how creepy his role was. Instead, he lied as usual. And Ann is in on the game too, repeatedly dropping the word Mormon in front "mission," giving it the aura of some sort of military operation, when in fact the Romney sons were basically sent on Mormon church-sponsored vacations to beautiful locations.

She isn't a "vile" or "wretched" person just because she equated serving her country to serving her church, nor is she vile for living a privileged life. You can disagree with that comparison, but saying she is a vile human being is way over the too.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)First Ladies are part of the package when you elected the President. Being a First Lady gives them the platform to promote their agenda, something that has been done by all First Ladies in the past both republicans and democrats (Michelle Obama's is health & fitness, Laura Bush was about reading for kids).
First Ladies also tag along with their husbands (and btw this would be the same when one day we finally have a First Husband) many times when the President greets dignitaries both here in the US and overseas.
I think Obama was quite clear that his run for president was a family decision that included Michelle and the kids. If Mitt is running without Ann's approval that's even WORSE because it shows how little Mitt considers his family when pushing his political agenda.
As for serving the church, there are plenty of people who do that in this country but they do something for good like helping those in needs. Mormon missions are nothing more than spending something like a year in some fancy location where they knock on doors all day trying to convert people. The missions are hard work, that's all they do day and night, but it's to pester people about converting not actually helping anyone in need.
