Doctors issue grave warning to Memphis and Shelby County leaders as COVID-19 cases continue to surge

https://www.localmemphis.com/mobile/article/news/health/coronavirus/doctors-issue-grave-warning-to-memphis-and-shelby-county-leaders-as-covid-19-cases-continue-to-surge/522-d589caeb-340f-4dd6-918d-85a0a01e5158

“We must inform you that we may have to begin triaging patients,” this due to “a lack of skilled personnel resources.”

MEMPHIS, Tenn — The University of Tennessee Health Science Center along with top doctors from every hospital in the Memphis area sent a grave warning to Memphis and Shelby County officials about the area hospital situation.

The letter said "currently our system emergency departments are operating dangerously over capacity and housing dozens of admitted patients in each of our Emergency Departments". They expect hospitalized COVID patients to double by the end of August and increase six-fold by the end of September, which would mean more admitted COVID patients than the City of Memphis has beds for on any normal day.

More at link. No way, imo, should willful anti vaxers be allowed to break our healthcare system! Send them home with rx for oxygen or whatever.

When there is a bed available. They will have one hour to get there and claim it.
Give them a list of quarantine rules and suggestions for pain and symptom relief.

Most people would probably be more comfortable waiting at home anyway, and it's less likely to spread COVID to people in the waiting room.

Good God that is just chilling. And not that it matters but I'm 100% w/SheltieLover ... do not tie up
and medical personal, equipment, or bed space on the anti vax & anti mask people.

Build tent cities and give 'em food, water, and palliative care only.

If I was in that area and I hadn't had a vax then I would be getting one tomorrow.

They are concerned about not being able to provide timely care to everyone and said they will have to make decisions on care based on the probability of survival.

I watched a news clip where a woman who works for an ambulance company spent 2 hours trying to find a bed for a patient who had a heart attack. He ended up going into cardiac arrest while he was waiting. These dumbasses are destroying the chance for other people to get treatment.

The county has reinstated an indoor mask mandate & school board has been firm against gov Lee's parental opt out of masks order.

Other than that, not much they can do.

Counties surrounding Memphis all come to Memphis for hospital care, in addition to much of northern MS.

For some reason unknown to me, they dismantled a 400-bed overflow hospital built out by the Army Corps of Engineers way early.

When it was built, they said it was planned to stay open for either 2 or 4 years - I can't recall which, but we are a long way from that point.

Anyway, the Dem leadership in Memphis is superb, but overshadowed by qpuke gov & legislature.

Last year the county schools were fully virtual, which likely saved many deaths.

Of course, that drove the gov & his cronies to the poibt of threatening to pull something like $80 mill in school funding. Never happened though.

Madness.

And let them take care of their own. Leave my fellow HCPs and their families out of it.

If you called us evil, threatened us, and told us (providers and nurses) we didn't know what we were talking about when we told you the vaccine was free, that it's safe, and it's effective . . . . . why on earth would you want to come to us now? Just NO. Take care of your own, and good luck. Also, stay the fuck out of public while you're busy dying please. Same goes for your family. Thank you, that will be all.

Memphis is 65% Black and Shelby County is 52% Black. Black people in Tennessee are also the least vaccinated demographic group at 35% so it's a safe bet that the majority of people being admitted there are unvaccinated African Americans with common comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

You all keep fantasizing that these ICUs are just full of unvaccinated white trump supporters though.....
