An individual walks by a river and notices an infant drowing, so naturally s/he jumps in and saves the child. As there is no one else around, s/he finally must make the decision to head upstream and find out who is tossing the children in the water, leaving, obviously, at least one child to drown.

Unpleasant does not even begin to express the situation in Afghanistan, but like the individual with the babies, at some point one must go to the source and cut off the problem at its root. Obviously, as with the analogy, there will be loss of life. However, at some point, as with the stoy, it becomes not only impractical, but also just a little insane to keep rescuing innocents without addressing the source of the problem.

In this case, there was nothing that could be improved in Afghanistan and the hard decision unfortunately leaves some victims. But, it is no longer practical nor sane to continue following the same method for untold years, however many innocent individuals might be saved, as there is a non-ending source of victims available to the Taliban.
