60th NYPD officer dies of COVID

The NYPD reached a grim milestone Friday as the department’s 60th member died from COVID, police said.

Officer Sony Clerge died Friday morning, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said in a memo to his officers. Clerge is the third member of the NYPD to die from COVID complications in recent days.

NYPD personnel who have died of COVID include police officers and detectives, civilian employees, auxiliary volunteers, school and traffic safety officers and crossing guards.

Only about 47% of NYPD employees are vaccinated, officials said.

2. We're supposed to take them seriously when they say they "feared for their life",

when it's used to justify killing an unarmed civilian, but their not so afraid for their lives that they're willing to mask and get vaccinated, even though Covid is the most likely thing to kill them.

I just don't get them.

3. Can you imagine if those deaths

Were due to shootings or otherwise in the line of duty, there would be national outcry and a call to arms. But if its COVID they put their heads in the sand. For what it's worth 23 NYPD officers died on 911.

4. Not defending the NYPD but the officer in question is responsible for his own choices as well

You shouldn't need a mandate to know you should get vaccinated especially when you hold a public facing job such as a police officer. I hope the officer didn't spread it to others while on the job.

5. It would be good to know how many of them weren't vaxxed or wore masks off the job.
