(484 posts)They crossed over with Country Western stations, which was the music I was raised on. I learned to sing harmony listening to them.

Their voices blended well, and they were pitch-perfect, but that's true of a lot of groups. The unique thing about their harmony was that their timing and phrasing was so identical -- even during those incredible slides! -- I always said it sounded like one person singing with two sets of vocal cords. I don't know if that came naturally to them, but most singers would need to put in hours and hours of practice to sing anywhere near that much alike.

(51,646 posts)I think that was also the secret behind the Beach Boys' (brothers Brian, Carl & Dennis Wilson, cousin Mike Love) incredible harmonies as well.

(25,982 posts)One of the camp directors loved music and connected the PA to a stereo system as excuse to play it constantly. It seemed a little odd at the time, in the late sixties, to be immersed in the music of the American Graffiti era for two weeks every August, several years in a row. A song or two would play after announcements calling us to one activity or another. We heard lots of the Everly Brothers. Those songs are wrapped around some very fond memories.

(6,625 posts)A lot of their hits were written by the husband/wife team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. Supposedly the rivalry between the brothers was so great that the writers would split up to intro the songs to the brothers separately, telling each one that his was the lead part and that his brother's part was the harmony.
The joke of it all is that with those perfect two-part harmonies, neither is the lead: the melody lines are inextricable, and it's impossible to perform those songs correctly with only one voice.

As much as I love the Everly Brothers, I think Nazareth did the best version of Love Hurts.
But Cathy's Clown is not the only song the Everly Brothers wrote.
Don Everly wrote some of their most popular songs, including Cathys Clown (1960), as well as (Til) I Kissed You (1959), and So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad) (1960). Phil Everlys compositions included When Will I Be Loved (1960), later covered by Linda Ronstadt.
