Republican Sen. Ben Sasse says the US should maintain a 'light footprint' of troops in Afghanistan

Sen. Ben Sasse said that the US should keep a "light footprint" of troops in Afghanistan to counter potential terrorists in the country with the reemergence of Taliban rule.

During an interview on "Fox News Sunday," the Nebraska Republican told host Chris Wallace that President Joe Biden should make it clear that the country could change its position on the US withdrawal if American citizens and allies are threatened.

He also rejected the notion that the US having a small presence in the country would be a problematic proposition.

"The false choice that the President has laid out again and again and again for months has never been true," he said. "The choice has never been between zero troops and just withdrawing and giving the Taliban back a sanctuary to allow terrorists to plot attacks of international reach or on the other hand, having 150,000 occupying ground forces."

So I guess the 2500 the Mango Mussolini left were enough. You clearly aren't paying attention Sasse.

How do you put troops back into Afghanistan without the support of the government indeed, with a government that is openly hostile to their presence. Do we just occupy Kabul airport? Take back Bagram - from the air with paratroopers I guess because any land supply is now out of the question.

I want what Senator Sasse has been smoking because it’s not a serious idea.

A “light footprint” in a country run by the Taliban? Is he f***ing kidding? Troops would be unable to defend themselves and be at the mercy of the Taliban.

What does his magical thinking think that would look like? Like the troops in Germany, a country run by Angela Merkel?

These dopes don’t deserve to serve in public office. Sasse is an idiot with a nice smile.

Wasn't this the last phase of Vietnam? Keep a light footprint of spec-ops and advisors after our troops left in '74 and get overwhelmed and over-run a year later -the real "Fall of Saigon".

It's a horrible idea. Even if there are rights issues after we leave.
We "won" the war in 2005. We lost the peace as soon as we propped up Karzai and ignored the provences and warlords, and we have been supporting a corpse since 2011.

Time to leave. Doing the same thing over and expecting different results is madness.
