That I'd like to ask everyone to participate in, if you'd be so kind
There's two dimensions to this, and I'm curious to see what the intersection looks like.
I want you to consider the total number of episodes in which, during the ages between 18 and 50 yo. (or however old you are, if less than 50) ... that you spent a day or more 'in bed sick', specifically due to some variety of infectious disease.
So, not a flare-up of a chronic condition or cancer or diabetes, or anything of that nature, but just plain SICK. I don't mean you never even got up from bed, but you didn't WANT to, except as absolutely necessary. Don't count 5 days in bed from 1 illness as 5 times, count it as 1 episode of sickness.
Here are the options for this parameter:
1) Sick in bed for at least 1 day, probably more than 3 different times
2) Sick in bed for at least 1 day, about 1 to 3 times
3) Sick in bad for at least 1 day, 0 times
And then for the 2nd parameter, I'd like you to consider how wide your exposure was to other humans, SPECIFICALLY BEFORE you were 18 years old.
Here are the options for this parameter (large city being 250,000 minimum population, and 'overseas' meaning an area significantly different from where you otherwise generally spent your time. UK/Ireland is not overseas, for example):
A) Rural/suburban life - less than 1 year in a large city, and without ANY period of time living overseas
B) Mixed rural/suburban and city life - 1 to 4 years in a large city, no time living overseas
C) Urban life - more than 4 years in a large city, OR any time living overseas

(205,552 posts)I've lived in the suburbs of 1 large city, 2 small cities and 1 small town - all before I was 18. And as a kid I had mumps, measles, chicken pox and rubella - one of these illnesses in each of the 4 places I lived growing up. I probably had the flu at some point, too, but those specific illnesses I remember.

(33,643 posts)I'm curious what the correlation might be with 'exposure to lots of other people' when you're a child (second parameter).
Childhood diseases are not part of the question

(205,552 posts)I think I got it right this time, though I thought I was born in the suburbs of a large city - Albany, New York - though I looked up the current population and it's less that 100,000. I learn something new here every day.

(2,708 posts)Es ist katzenjammer auf deutsch, meow. Katzen jammer means 'cat's misery' and is the german term. Me OW.
In college I had a few katzenjammeren, would put me high on your options more than 3 per year (OK, about a dozen per year, quite the lush I was, not now). Not counting them I would be 1-3, so I put down 1-3 urban, can undo depending on your ruling. Washington DC. Me OW. Cheers.

(3,310 posts)Other than that, I used to get 2-3 bad colds each year. Even if I wasn't sick in bed, I knew my coworkers would rather I keep my contagious self at home.
Urban, all US.

(11,795 posts)I've spent loads of time living in major cities overseas. I also lived in LA for 4 years.
The only illnesses that have left me bedridden are GI ones (thank you, Mexico City, Guadalajara and Lima). But I did have a horrendous case of the "flu" in January 2020 and I had COVID-19 in July. I wasn't really bedridden for COVID so much as quarantined (I had very few symptoms thanks to Pfizer).

(270 posts)If "A" is rural, how can "1B" be rural?

(4,544 posts)According to the descriptions, I'm 1B because I've been sick like described more than 3 times and have lived all over the place in lots of different places and situations. But on the chart, 1B is called "rural." I don't seem to fit anywhere.(Not that that's anything unusual. LOL)
