"SNIP......
Dan Pfieffer: This is not a drill. Newsom could absolutely be recalled and California one of the bluest states in the land would be governed by a Republican. This is not fearmongering. All the polls show that the recall election is basically a coin flip.
......SNIP"
As was pointed out on Real Time, a conservative California Governor could nominate a Senator to replace, say 88 year old Diane Feinstein, and then Democratic agenda is sunk in Washington.
Call or email every Californian you know.

(102,294 posts)recalls far too easy. And there is far too much complacency, too much "blase'" attitude. Even on DU!
Since 1911, when California approved recalls as part of a sweeping Progressive-era reform package, 179 recall attempts have been made against state officeholders. Launching a recall in California is easier than in almost any state, and every governor since 1960 has faced at least one.
A recall petition must be signed by enough registered voters to equal 12 percent of the turnout in the last election for governor. NOT 12% of registered voters! The organizers do not need to give a reason for the recall, but they often do. The petition must include at least 1 percent of the last vote for the office in at least five counties. Proponents have 160 days to gather their signatures.

(28,079 posts)Democrats in California need to take this seriously and step up. Mail your ballots back or turn up on election day.
Mail in may be tricky as I heard on Stephanie Miller that there reports that there has been a delay in getting ballots delivered in some heavily Democratic areas. Proabably best to use a drop off site if you're not voting in person.
Remember, Feinstein is 88 and if she can't finish her term, the governor gets to appoint her replacement.
This whole thing may be legal but it is just another Republican dirty trick.

(3,486 posts)If we lose, we deserve it! I mailed in my ballot last Wednesday and got the text this morning that it had been received and counted. Like I said it took about 2 minutes to complete the ballot, lick the envelope, and put it in the mail.

(53,410 posts)We had two choices. 1. Vote against the recall, or 2. Vote for the person you prefer to replace the present Governor with. Swartzenegger had a following. Were those your choices this time?
Im retired in New Mexico now and its a blue state. Democrats hold the majority in both houses and one of our Native Americans is the head of the Department of the interior. Im really proud of that. Biden was smart to select her. Shes Deb Harland..

(3,486 posts)First question, should Newsome be recalled.
Second question, who should replace Newsome. Over 40 candidates including Angelyne!
Democrats are only supposed to answer the first question with 'NO' of course. That's what I did.

take this threat seriously. The other side certainly is. And yes, it would be a huge deal if Newsom were recalled and we got a RW nut job like Elder. Also, once we are past this
Dems need to seriously look at reforming this process. Cause they way it works now just
doesnt. Unless youre a Repub knowing this is the only possible way youre winning statewide office.
The whole thing just pisses me off, and I think I put my finger on why. The largest silver lining in this craptastic year and a half was the fact that leaders on my state actually have a damn about trying to save lives. They were willing to take the steps needed to minimize damage from the pandemic as much as possible. It just kills me that a) Newsom might be recalled for precisely this reason and b) if they get someone like Elder in all the sacrifices and hard work weve done will be undone the minute theyre sworn in. Its depressing af.

(20,136 posts)Could they not amend the Elections Code to prevent the Feinstein scenario? (Require someone of the same party, make the governor choose from a list drafted by the legislature?)
Obviously no Democrat should brush off the recall and everyone needs to vote.
