Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is a "canary in the coalmine" when it comes to the GOP's relationship with former President Trump, contending that the senator "has a good political nose for his base."
"But I would use him as a canary in the coalmine and the degree to which he has doubled, tripled and quadrupled down on Trump says everything. Whether you like him or not, he has a good political nose for his base," Sanford wrote in his memoir, "Two Roads Diverged," set to be released Tuesday.
The Guardian reported on parts of the book, which discusses Sanford's opposition to Trump and extramarital affair, which made headlines in 2009.
Sanford, who also represented South Carolina in Congress for two stretches of time, said Graham, with whom he reportedly plays golf on occasion, "adapts" when holding power is on the line.

(54,410 posts)He is actually a very nice guy, very cordial, and listens. One time, almost 2 years ago, I was a table at a seminar in Charleston with just 3 people: me, Sanford and Al Franken. The two of them got along just fine, too. No matter what his personal views and weaknesses were (and he owns up to all of them), he does seem to have a relatively (for a Republican) steady finger on the pulse of local politics. If he has anything to day about Graham, I'd at least listen. I don't know Graham (don't really care to, either), but Graham does indeed appear to me to be the ultimate opportunist. No private views, no strong opinions beyond a strong desire to retain his power and that depends on his influence with his base. Graham is about as solid as Silly Putty.
