I used to have a lot of it.
When it comes to Moron-Americans, not a lot left.

(6,205 posts)sometimes a full tank other times running on fumes. Grief is taking its toll when it comes to my empathy account. Hope that makes some sense to the reader. My son and four others passed due to the GBM tumors - like Beau Biden, Kennedy and McCain had. Two friends were taken by Covid19.

(102,294 posts)and to be honest most of them are well educated enough not to ever have been Trumpers and they DO believe in science, medicine, vaccines and all the rest that sane people do.
But, lately, I'm having a bit of a hard time not holding them at least somewhat responsible for all the pain and damage being done by RWers in Congress, State Legislatures, and Governor's seats. And what really sets me off is when they show (feign?) ignorance about events that lead me to believe they are still getting most or all news only from Fox.
Empathy is dwindling and I haven't even gotten to the Trump-loving world-hating 40%.

(115,735 posts)But it's tough these days. My empathy for the willfully unvaccinated is about used up but I do feel sorry for their kids and others who had no control over their decision. Saddest thing I read lately was about the woman who had been vaccinated and got a mild case but her two adult sons refused to be vaccinated and died within a day of each other. They were her only surviving children (until they weren't any more), and I'm sorry for her and angry at them for what they did to their mother - not for what they did to themselves, dumbasses that they were.

(2,218 posts)Yes, they were Nazi pawns, but many of them had little choice and a lot of them were protecting their family and fighting for their country. The racists among them, picked hatred. I still pity them, but they earned their deaths. In all of these cases it was them or suffering elsewhere. So I regret their suffering, but at the same time, their deaths were for the greater good.
I have sympathy for the conservative idiots of the world. I wish they did not have to suffer. They probably suffered child abuse and they would be ostracized, hated and possibly killed by their spouse and community if they did not hold to their stupidity. Yet, in the final resolution, as sad as it is, you don't want Portuguese man-o-war in your child's bathing pool. I pity the damaged people who care not at all for the elderly who served and fought in WWII or your children and are happy to ignore truth and play propagating and mutating Russian roulette with their community, but I must rejoice when they go to their maker. Evolution is cruel but it has made the beautiful world that these people would destroy without a care.

(34,076 posts)After a willfully unvaccinated student exposed me on Saturday.
That follows my daughter and boyfriend being ill with the creepy crud (not COVID - but still disconcerting), my foster son being exposed to COVID following life-threatening surgery, and another student flaunting the mask rules (ending up positive) then lying about close contacts with about 90 students.
Fortunately, I have not yet had personal experience with actually being sick with it. I got an aggressive cancer instead.

(34,076 posts)that the effects of COVID lessen over time. Take care of yourself.
I just sent a note out to my students explaining my absence today - doing a bit of education about COVID and appeal to their sense of responsiblility for the community (explaining that I'm not required to isolate, but I am because as a vaccinated person I'm less likely to have a severe case - or even know I have it - BUT - just as infectious if I do - and encouraging them to adopt the same attitude so we can stay in person for classes this year.)
I hope it reaches them.

(50,955 posts)There is no sense wasting emotion on them.
What is going to happen is that Delta will rip through the population for a few months and they will get all the heartache we have tried to prevent for them. Those who survive, that is.
I just want it to happen fast.

(1,850 posts)I was recently visiting NYC where I was born and raised. Taking busses and subways to get around, they're air-conditioned but waiting on hot platforms and walking through oppressive tunnels and connectors I had empathy and respect for my fellow New Yorkers. Almost everyone was wearing a mask in the subway, and many wore them out on the streets too.
Empathy for those who aren't vaccinated, protest public health recommendations and mandates,, get sick, spread it, take up hospital resources, space and staff, not so much.
Ms. Toad
(34,076 posts)I just wished the vaccine-refusing student who exposed me over the weekend severe consequences, but not severe enough that they leave her child parentless.
The day she exposed me I threw a full on tantrum at the 3rd group of "too special to wear masks" students I encountered. I don't think they knew what hit them.
I'd say pretty darn close to zero for anyone who is not actively taking steps to minimize the damage they do to others. And that lack of empathy extends to the "Not gonna wear a mask" crowd on DU.

(6,395 posts)I have both friends and family opposed to the vaccine. Only a matter of time before I have to bury one of them (who knows, I may already have with the usual excuses)...and, sad to say, I'm probably going to be a bid cold about it. After all, they were cold to me for getting vaccinated.

(34,172 posts)Lots of people die early from poor life decisions and I have empathy for them, too.
And COVID is a lousy and lonely way to die.
But this is such a good opportunity for the self-righteous to call them names and tell them to eff off that I wouldn't want to see that denied to them. I'm sure it brings meaning to their lives.
