Madison Cawthorn's unforgivable dereliction of duty

https://www.themountaineer.com/opinion/columns/madison-cawthorn-s-unforgivable-dereliction-of-duty/article_94d29566-010d-11ec-94a3-d33b96ccb778.html

In a 24-hour span from Tuesday into Wednesday, Western North Carolina experienced flood destruction on a level not witnessed for 17 years. Yet, as the floodwaters rose with fury — destroying homes and businesses in their path — and finally receded in the late morning hours of Wednesday, Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC-11) released no statement, no list of resources or shelters for constituents, and not a single tweet in support of the thousands in WNC residents suffering from the flood. On Wednesday morning, more than 30 of his constituents were still tragically unaccounted for, according to the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office.

Lest we think he was simply off the grid, 26-year-old Cawthorn tweeted or retweeted Republican talking points nine times from his official House account while the raging storm took hold of his district, reaping destruction on towns and rural communities. From tweets about finishing “the wall” to swearing America will never be an “Islamic state,” Cawthorn flatly, and blatantly ignored the people he has sworn to represent. As towns like Canton flooded Tuesday evening, Cawthorn blissfully posted pictures on Instagram (screenshot linked) of smoking cigars and listening to conservative podcasts.

In a call with his office at around 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday, more than a day after floodwaters began to rise, staffers were still scrambling to respond to basic questions, apparently surprised by the onslaught of calls from constituents stating they have “been working on it all morning.” Many local officials and first responders got no sleep Tuesday night working bravely and diligently to respond to the crisis.

When asked about Cawthorn’s lack of response and tone-deaf tweets during the flooding, the staffer said that while Cawthorn does see and approve all tweets, the account is run by staff — a sign that Rep. Cawthorn has yet to focus his staff toward essential, homefront communications when so many of his constituents were without access to vital information.

3. His constituents should be ecstatic. He's simply being the incompetent buffoon they happily elected.

He won by 12 points so it's not like was elected in a squeaker.

of his sad wheelchair/disability story and he's handsome. Plus the R beside his name.

That's it.

Hopefully, our team can find a good person to run against him. There's certainly plenty of meat for the political ads.

This isn’t one of those districts where a ball of lint could get elected as a Republican. MadCaw didn’t win 75 - 25. He won 55 - 42 in a district that contains a large number of Democrats. A 7-point swing changes the outcome of that race.

Trump won’t be on the ballot in 2022 to pull the hardcore anarchists to the polls. MadCaw doesn’t really care about representing his district. He wants to be a media star.

10. Given his chief of staff's experience, this comes as no surprise. ... A fireworks stand operator!

The quarterly disbursements statement shows the first-term Western North Carolina Republican Cawthorn's Chief of Staff William "Blake" Harp made $31,777.77 in the first quarter of the year, the equivalent of $127,111 annually.

That is not unusual for a person running the office of a member of Congress. But Harp, who apparently knew Cawthorn since at least 2016 when Cawthorn was 20 years old and Harp was of a similar age, has no background in government, unlike other chiefs of staff, a Republican legislative staff member said.

The staffer, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, said Harp had said his only work had been a construction job and running fireworks stands in Texas, where he grew up.
