Jesse Jackson has been fully vaccinated, receiving his first shot in January at a public event where he urged others to do the same. But Jacqueline Jackson has not been vaccinated, according to longtime family spokesman Frank Watkins.

(18,486 posts)Jackie Jackson has spent her life fighting for civil rights, has made sacrifices that would have broken most people, and has done more for social justice than probably anyone in this thread trashing her.
You know nothing about her life, her medical conditions or why she wasn't vaccinated. So cursing this woman and calling her a "moron" is outrageous.
Sometimes this place makes me sick.

Hopefully she can recover and encourage others to learn from her bad choice and self inflicted ordeal.

(18,486 posts)what her decision was based on. And someone calling her a "fucking moron" when they know nothing about her circumstances is beyond the pale.
Edited to correct my assumption that I was responding to the person who attacked Mrs. Jackson.
And to add that Rev. Jackson said today that his wife wasn't vaccinated because of a preexisting condition.

Hopefully she explains more after her recovery, she could also use her experience as an example to get more of the AA community to get vaccinated.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)She told the world through her husband that she didn't take the vaccination because of a preexisting condition. She didn't even owe anyone that, but she certainly doesn't have any obligation to lay bare to the public her medical history. It's no one's business at all.

(11,949 posts)Then it should go to a vaccinated person that needs it. But, of course that is unlikely. And no one should be dragged out of ICU to allow vaccinated people to be there. It should only be a triage decision. Which only a few areas are dealing with. Like here in Florida.
It is hypocrisy to suddenly have sympathy for those who refuse the vaccine because they are on our side.
Huge exception! If her doctor recommended against a vaccine for pre-existing conditions then I withdraw my earlier comments.
It really is none of our business.
I wish them both well.
Bucky
(54,027 posts)You don't want to live in a world where doctors have the discretion of choosing who deserves to be treated.
They should treat the patients that come in. All things being equal, they should treat the ones who need it first and in the order they come in at. If supplies start running out, they should triage. They do NOT choose who deserves to be helped.

Their fucked in choices caused me immeasurable suffering up to and including hospitalization.
If a hospital bed were to have to be chosen between a non smoker and them, I am totally cool with a Dr. making this decision.

(68,586 posts)Governor DeWine Signs State Budget That Includes Anti-LGBTQ Medical Refusal Language
by Wyatt Ronan July 1, 2021
Governer Mike DeWine signed an Ohio state budget that included language allowing health care workers, hospitals, and health insurance companies to refuse to provide or pay for medical services on the basis of moral, ethical, or religious objection. After being added to the Senate version of the budget, the language was retained by the Ohio General Assemblys conference committee, before being passed on an up or down vote by both chambers and landing on Governor DeWines desk. The provision allows medical practitioners to deny medical care based upon the providers personal beliefs, including for LGBTQ people in Ohio. Governor DeWine had the opportunity to line-item veto the language while signing the rest of the budget into law and refused to do so.
This provision is one of more than 250 anti-LGBTQ bills that came under consideration in more than 30 state legislatures across the country in the 2021 legislative session. Human Rights Campaign President Alphonso David released the following statement in response to Governor DeWine signing a state budget with dangerous anti-LGBTQ medical refusal provisions:

(25,380 posts)It won't happen.....
You grit your teeth, wring your hands and deal with it....
I worked in neonatal and most of the nurses working in neonatal are childbearing age...Some of us had fertility issues. Since I worked at the county hospital, many of the moms had another type of fertility issue and they used drugs while they were pregnant....We also had plenty of 22 year old moms who were on like their 5th baby. It was really hard emotionally for nurses to smile and be polite to those moms when they couldn't have babies of their own.
I couldn't get pregnant for awhile...and it was tough...everyday...moms with babies...moms who were irresponsible and having babies...it was hard...Fortunately, after awhile, I got pregnant again and as soon as I did, those feelings went away, I had lost my objectivity during that time. However, the ethics were objective and we all followed them..
It was a real hard time for me though. The joy I felt at my job had turned into depression, however as soon as I got pregnant again, I put a smile on my face and was just happy to be among all the moms and babies....
One nurse had a baby that was born with congenital defects that only lived a few days...it was sooo hard for her to go back to work...
One nurse was from Taiwan and we took care of many immigrants who had just crossed the border. One time, she lashed out about it and said, "I came here legally and had to do this and that and went through all this work to get here and these women just walk over here and have babies"....She was coming from her own place and struggles. She did get in trouble for saying it though.

(54,027 posts)I have friends who are nurses. One came out of retirement to work with hospital experiencing shortages and personnel. Another is a nurse in maternity section who's seen an infant with covid. It's an absolutely shitty situation all around.
We're not treating this like the invasion that it is. We're not treating the anti-vaxxers like fifth columnists, which they are--doing the enemy's work from behind the lines.
But we're not going to beat their barbarian ethics by behaving barbarically ourselves. You know the old saying, choose your enemies wisely for you shall become them. We need to decide if our enemy is the virus, which fights relentlessly, or if our enemy is the moral reprobates behind the anti-vax movement.
I'd rather fight relentlessly then turn my own people. Yes, even the bad and stupid ones

(792 posts)We're fortunate that we know our government is in 100% alignment with science and objectivity, and acting in everyone's best interest with this vaccine, especially Blacks.
It wasn't the same situation when your uncle was growing up so he is unfortunately unable to benefit as the rest of us are. Hopefully he will see how well people are doing with the vaccine and the horrible effects of COVID that the non-vaccinated are experiencing and change his mind soon!

Why in the world are folks giving her a pass because she is a Dem and Jesse's wife?!
