https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2021/08/23/comirnaty-brand-name-fda-approved-pfizer-biontech-vaccine/8245932002/It's not easy to pronounce. But one thing is certain about FDA-approved Comirnaty: It works
Elizabeth Weise
USA TODAY
The Food and Drug Administration issued full authorization Monday for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Soon, millions of Americans will face a confusing, difficult task: How in the heck do you pronounce Comirnaty?
That's the brand name for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. It's pronounced "co-MER-na-tee" according to Scott Piergrossi, president of creative for the Brand Institute, which crafted the name.
It's a little easier to say than BNT162b2, the research name of the vaccine while it was first being studied, but not much.
Why Comirnaty?
According to the companies, it "represents a combination of the terms COVID-19, mRNA, community, and immunity."

Well, its official. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now officially approved the first Covid-19 vaccine for people 16 years and older, as Jemima McEvoy reported for Forbes. People have been referring to the vaccine as the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine. But now that its progressed from the emergency use authorization (EUA) stage, you may be seeing more of its brand name. And that brand name is, drum roll please, Comirnaty.
Whats that? Co-ed manatees? Nadia Comăneci? Vormir is nasty? Covfefe? No, Comirnaty. So, if youve been thinking of naming your kid Comirnaty, you may want to re-consider. After all, theres a reason why you might not name your kid Reeses Peanut Butter Cups or iPhone. Those names are already taken by other products, and it could be a bit confusing when someone says, your iPhone needs an update
You may be thinking, Comirnaty is such an obvious name for the Covid-19 vaccine. But, if you arent, you may be wondering how this name arose? Did someone accidentally hit himself or herself in the genitals and say Comirnaty? Or was this a case of a little too much thought:
Well, according to Beth Snyder Bulik writing for Fierce Pharma, the Brand Institute helped come up with the name. The name uses the prefix co- to represent community, the mirna for mRNA, and the -ty as a nod towards the end of both community and immunity. So the name is supposed to make you think about the technology behind the vaccine, immunity, and community at the same time, rather than one manatee saying to another, come on, manatee, lets go party. Thus, the correct phonetic pronunciation of this new brand name will be koe-mir-na-tee. Of course, the pronunciation may differ depending on what part of the country you may hail from:

(26,080 posts)6. It's because Moderna already snagged "SpikeVax"
Which is a name I like, and I sometimes use it instead of Moderna or "Dolly Jab."

(24,890 posts)7. The Charlotte PHA is now Inlivien. BBT is Truest.
We are now living in a time of complete and utter stupidity and triviality.
And we thought New Coke and clear Pepsi was a bad idea? That was child's play compared to the crap now.
I think I may have just misspelled both of them. Because they are nonsense.
I think Bill Hicks was probably right about marketers. Look that one up.
