Republicans Silent As Biden Gets 21,600 People Out Of Afghanistan In A Single Day
President Biden is getting twice as many people out of Afghanistan as national security officials set as their goal, and Republicans are saying nothing.
The White House provided new numbers on evacuations to PoliticusUSA:
Since August 14, the U.S. has evacuated and facilitated the evacuation of approximately 58,700 people. Since the end of July, we have re-located approximately 63,900 people.
John Harwood noted that this is two to four times higher than the goal set by intelligence officials:
@JohnJHarwood
Biden national security officials last week set goal of evacuating 5K-9K per day from Afghanistan
this morning, WH says 21,600 were flown out of Kabul in last 24 hours - 12,700 on US military flights, 8,900 on allied coalition flights
total evacuees in last 10 days: 58,700

Nearly 64,000 People Evacuated Without A Single Life Lost
Republicans have been criticizing Biden for the Afghanistan airlift while killing hundreds of people a day in states where they are in charge of government with COVID.
It is not surprising that as the Biden airlift operation has ramped up, the only thing that Republicans and Fox News can do is absurdly claim that Americans are being stranded in Afghanistan.
The GOP was already planning an entire 2022 attack ad campaign around the airlift, but it those ads may backfire as, at the current pace, the US airlift will be a massive success.

A Biden success on getting Americans and vulnerable Afghans out makes McConnell. McCarthy, Cruz, Graham look BAD. TFG, even WORSE.

(6,833 posts)So competent, in fact, that his political enemies are reduced to manufacturing rumors from whole cloth in a desperate effort to maintain their pretention of relevance.
The GQP is like discarded traffic control devices strewn about in the havoc of road construction, damaged barricades. Temporary obstructions, now permanently useless, having become just so much waste to be picked up and hauled off.
When their minions make their stand(s), I expect that's about all it will amount to then as well. They may even try to use orange barrels to cower behind.

(19,066 posts)I noticed it the other day in a press conference. They wouldn't answer how many Americans are left. I think that's strategic to keep that from the Taliban so they don't know their leverage is almost gone.
I expect sometime in the next week for the US to make an announcement that every American is out of Afghanistan out of the blue. Then we have to weigh if we want to try to stay longer than the deadline to get Afghanis out.

(19,066 posts)We're going to get everyone out who wants to get out, but beware of back channels Republicans might use to bribe the Taliban to take Americans hostage like they did for Reagan in Iran in 1980. I could see Republicans offering billions to the Taliban if they snatched up a couple hundred American hostages in the last days of the evacuation and held them indefinitely.
They did exactly that with Iran, traded them arms to hold onto the hostages longer than they wanted to so they could defeat Carter in 1980.

(19,066 posts)He was around for that, he saw that the Republicans are indifferent to the potential loss of American life if it can further their political goals.
There is nothing Republicans won't do. They'd hand over a nuclear weapon to ISIS and give them a way to get it to American soil if they could. They no longer want America to continue.

(21,485 posts)to continue, but I'm sure they would be content with a fraudent appearance of it while they use the structure to benefit themselves.
Biden is much wiser and intelligent than the opposition and even some of our own give him credit for. Natural intelligence, decades of experience, and strong character and moral compass.
I have faith in him as he walks this tightrope, but even he is only human so I pray that he continues to pull this off well and handles any intervening obstacles thrown at him.

(7,850 posts)the 24/7 MSM Biden-bashing seems to be losing steam and the self-righteous Republicans are pulling an Emily Litella..."Never mind"? ... I also think the supine public's feigned outrage for an evacuation that was always going to be clusterfuck in a war they forgot about ten years ago is waning considering the delta variant and the unvaccinated are killing their kids right here in the good ol' USA

(43,177 posts)It depends on all factors coming together. Among the world's most elite and successful rolodexes with keen wisdom and experience in policy, hires, implementation, strategy to manage the resources. Thankfully President Biden is at the top of his game. This is how you manage a crisis. I don't think every president had these full capabilities.

(1,910 posts)The reporters are trying so hard to make controversy and find something to hone in on. The spokesperson told them 100 times that Americans are not required to register so it is impossible to know how many are still there.
Seriously, if you go to Afghanistan to make money, do not register with the embassy, hear Trump say the troops will leave, and still stay until the bitter end....tough luck.
Same category as the antivaxxers in my book. They made their beds.

Excellent job by the Biden administration. NO ONE could have done better, and certainly the person who handed Afghanistan over to the Taliban wouldn't have come close to that.

(3,174 posts)At even 300 people per plane that's an awful lot of planes and a truly prodigious amount of fuel. I hope someone is monitoring the amount of Jet Petroleum 5 remaining in the fuel tanks.
I remember a pilot in Tokyo saying we needed to take on 30,000lbs of fuel to fly 8 minutes from Haneda airport, where we'd had to land for weather, to Narita where the schedule said we were going and where all the customs, immigration and baggage handling had been moved to.
And another thing: There are presumably citizens of other countries who want to get out of there too. I wonder how they're faring. The US MSM is always so murkan-centric you'd think there was no-one else in the same predicament.
