...many folks looking on don't appreciate how tenuous the cessation of conflict with the Taliban is, and how perilous it will be for Afghans caught in the way of all of that armed struggle for power.

That does not mean that it automatically falls to the US to resume it's contradictory and counterproductive occupation indefinitely. As the president said, it's contrary to the original mission, destabilizing, and counter to our domestic needs.
