Fauci's new 2022 timeline for Covid fight could be a political disaster for Biden and Democratshttps://www.cnn.com/2021/08/24/politics/anthony-fauci-timeline-covid-joe-biden/index.html
President Joe Biden just got some deeply unwelcome news: The pandemic that he was elected to end could drag on deep into a midterm election year, with all the political and economic destruction that could bring.
It also meant that Biden's best-laid plans of triumphing over the pandemic and riding an economic wave into the campaign for congressional election results in November next year now look at risk.
If the emergency does go on that long, it will offer an opening for Republicans who are seeking to brand Biden's presidency as a failure -- and who are seizing on his chaotic evacuation from Afghanistan to paint a broader narrative of political decay.
second to last paragraph is the elephant in the room this author missed
Even as conditions worsen, the political frenzy over the virus, vaccines and Covid-19 treatments is escalating. Several Republican governors, including Florida's Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott of Texas, are waging cultural wars over mask mandates in schools ahead of reelection races and possible presidential bids. Trump's lukewarm endorsement of vaccines was booed by his crowd in Alabama on Saturday night, so don't look for the ex-President to drop much political capital on the issue in future. And the FDA just had to warn against a new crank Covid "cure" -- a livestock deworming drug -- pushed on conservative and social media.

(12,278 posts)Democrats will be fine.
Joe promised enough vaccine to immunize the entire population and he delivered...a person can walk into any CVS/Walgreens and get a jab..no playing the vaccine lottery...the Republican governors in red states are killing kids and the un-vaxxed gullibly stupid are allowing them to do it..Joe will not get the blame...the apathetic callous governors will be held accountable...and fuck CNN!

(10,434 posts)But as long as the media covers it this way, it will be the result republicons want. They'll blame Biden for the economy, jobs, disease and death. All of which is the direct fault of MF45. But we won't hear that.

(7,850 posts)the economy is still chugging along nicely, the job market is different but not dire...and don't underestimate Trump fatigue...even the republicans hate his guts...all those nazi loving rally goers voted for the that depraved sociopath in 2020 but we still won.. we endured voter restrictions, hours long voter wait lines, Trump/Barr/DeJoy's attempt to fix the election and with all that shit thrown at us we still won...and don't forget there's whole generation of younger voters who hate everything the GOP stand for...and they vote..do you remember the joyous dancing in the streets when Biden/Harris were declared the winners..those guys vote...

(1,990 posts)The mass carnage we are about to witness will not be seen as Biden's fault, but the fault of those idiots Republican Governors. Folks, there will be mass child deaths from sea to sea and that will finally sink these idiots.
CNN can go to hell with this nonsense.
doc03
(35,346 posts)because of the way he is handling of COVID. He is getting the blame for people not getting vaccinated I guess. It basicly depends on how the media interprets it. They can't let Biden get too popular no horse race in 2022 and 2024 ratings ad
revenues will tank.

(1,990 posts)When kids start dying in mass, in Red States across this country, Biden will not be blamed. DeSantis and others will be held accountable for killing children, not Biden.

(19,993 posts)Blaming Biden and Democrats for the "botched" (per John Avlon) Afghan evacuation and a deadly virus that won't go away largely because the GQP is spreading it with their irresponsible policies and practices. Was that the GQP plan all along and CNN is finally getting on board with Fux, OAN, and Newsmax? Pathetic.
Mad_Machine76
(24,414 posts)they need to stop contributing to it by getting vaxxed, masking up as needed, etc. Dumping or revolting against some leaders like Abbott and DeathSantis would help too. And there is literally only so much Biden/Dems can do. People should be attacking Republicans for their efforts to extend the pandemic.

(24,414 posts)then it might not have been. The guidance was maybe a bit naive in terms of thinking that more people would voluntarily do the right thing and get vaxxed and maybe it was premature, but at that point in time cases were lower and we had had the vaccines for a few months. At some point, the guidance had to change based on the circumstances on the ground. They lifted the gate a bit, intending it for vaxxed people but then pretty much everybody took it as a sign that they too can just throw the masks off even if they weren't vaxxed.
pinkstarburst
(1,327 posts)They lifted the mask ban way too early. That was a major mistake on the CDC's part, I'm sorry to say.
And I don't give them a pass, not one single inch for their ridiculous excuse of "only the vaccinated were supposed to take their masks off." Anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of human behavior predicted from the moment this was announced that the anti-vax, anti-mask crowd was going to rip their masks off, too. They hated wearing them in the first place, and only grudgingly did because it was required. No way were they going to wear masks when others (vaccinated) were taking them off, especially when there is no easy way to determine on sight who is vaxed and who isn't.
I am sorry, but to a great extent, I blame the CDC's monumentally bad call on masks this spring for us being in the current state we are today.

(34,074 posts)Glad to see that Fauci's reality-based assessment is meeting with the same political response that the realists on DU have been met with for months.
(I don't do personal predictions more than a couple months out, but his projections seem based in reality to me, as we head back to indoor venues, full on in person schools, mask resistance among both the vaccinated and the unvaccinated, coupled with the success of vaccines in minimizing the disease for the vaccinated - leading to vaccinated individuals with COVID spreading it to others because we don't know we have it - or because we pretend it is just a cold.)
COVID has its own timeline - and the longer we try to pretend it is over (and do play stupid games like ditching the masks and packing indoor venues), the longer we contribute to extending the timeline (winning stupid prizes).
Get vaccinated, mask up, and stay away from crowded indoor venues.

I did elect Biden to not follow a policy of "Get sick and die, serfs! It's good for the economy!". He has more than delivered on my expectations.
