There are actually more than a few facilities in our area but I am somewhat of an insider on one of them.
Anyway, my wife's best friend has two sons and a daughter. One of the sons and a daughter have their undergraduate degrees and both have or are close to getting their Masters Degrees.
The other son was in and out of college but hasn't gone very far. He didn't really know what he wanted to do as far as a career. A couple years ago he started working at this Amazon. His mom informed us that his site gave out tiered raises in the beginning of July. Since he was there almost 2 years his hourly pay increased from $17/hr to $18/hr. Near the end of last week he was notified that he will be receiving another tiered raise beginning in September. His hourly pay will increase to $19.60/hr. That is about a 15% increase in pay in the course of the Summer which is crazy. She also told us he received an attendance bonus because he worked through the June promotion without missing a day. He may be in the shadow of his two siblings but he is not doing bad apparently. I am happy for him.
Needless to say warehousing is a highly competitive where I live. Along with the assorted Amazon centers, we have Fedex and DHL being a presence in the area. UPS has had a facility here for generations.
Whether you like them or not, Amazon seems to be changing the face of wages being paid. In my job, we are having difficulty filling positions. We filled a shipping/receiving position finally filled this month that was months in the making. Former co-workers are having much the same story with their respective companies. Some of our restaurants close one or two days a week because there just isn't enough help to go around.
I will be interested to see how this plays out.

(86,646 posts)That would be a plus. This morning I was stepping out for an appointment to find a box on my porch with my neighbor's address on it, in sharpie on the top of the box. Our cottages are clearly marked. They never knocked on the door, just left my neighbor's box on my doorstep. Came from Amazon so I guess it was their driver.
I say it mostly in jest, I don't know what entity actually delivered it but one would think the driver would be able to tell one unit # from another.

(11,473 posts)For a few years, when he was moved to a department where it took 15 min to walk to bathroom, longer than break and he got written up for going in a bottle, he quit and went to work for another warehouse without those problems.
You can have good pay and benefits but if you don't let your employees go to the bathroom on a break you have major issues!
