I started to follow him extremely closely during the Trump years, as it was a breath of fresh air and light from the darkness of the Trump era. Anyway, the Canadian media is apparently off it's rocker with rage over this story. I don't see any reason why it should alter perceptions of the Trudeau government at all. In the full context of what she said, it's a non-event in my eyes.
Anyway, here's the story:
https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/federal-minister-monsef-says-her-mention-of-taliban-as-our-brothers-is-a-cultural-reference-1.5560821
I want to take this opportunity to speak with our brothers, the Taliban. We call on you to ensure the safe and secure passage of any individual in Afghanistan out of the country. We call on you to immediately stop the violence, the genocide, the femicide, the destruction of infrastructure, including heritage buildings, she said, speaking alongside colleagues while providing an update about Canadas efforts to evacuate Afghans from the country.
When asked later if the term brothers reflected a softening of the governments approach to the Taliban, she responded: Hardly.
The Taliban are a terrorist group and yet they claim to be Muslims, she said. The reference to brothers is a cultural reference of course but let me be very clear, we do not support the Taliban, we are horrified the hard-won gains of the past 20 years are at stake.
I just want to make sure that my rose-coloured glasses towards Trudeau aren't making me miss something here. I see this as just more right-wing faux outrage that they're so good at. You don't join in their outrage, do you? Let me know if I'm way off base here. I see it as, at worst, an attempt to soften the Taliban up to help Canadians get out of Afghanistan, which the Canadian media claims to so desperately want. It also comes at a moment when Trudeau is surging in the polls. Coincidence for this to become a thing?

(30,613 posts)Normal people can see that. She should just admit it and move on.

"I want to take this opportunity to speak with our brothers, the Taliban." - playing over and over in a political ad would be pretty bad.

(1,835 posts)I read that she was demoted from a more senior post earlier because she is mistake-prone. I am starting to see why. Still, we need to review her entire statement in context also.

like they've forgotten Harper, the Tory PM that preceded Trudeau. How very like the U.S. MSM.
I'll take Trudeau over any Tory Fascist.

(21,646 posts)of him already is based on how he stands for climate change while trying to expand oil pipeline for the industry . First Nations and environmental groups know the damage already seen chemicals leaking into groundwater and I dont care he was disappointed about Keystone and USA
So I dont have a great opinion of him , but Canada could do much much worse .
These statement dont move my opinion one way or another but yeah the haters will make something of it
But of course he must deal with conservatives up north stirring shit about this along with their media too. Its too be expected with his popularity they want to drag him with something so this works this week.
Thank you Joe Biden for stopping the Keystone Pipeline on your first day as President
