At the end of the President's speech tonight at the Al Smith dinner,

He quoted Scripture (I think it was Romans 5) about adversity leading to perseverance and hope. He went to apply that lesson to the US overcoming economic and other recent adversities.

But for me, my first thoughts were of him as a young man overcoming adversity in his personal life, and comparing the personal strength he must have developed to Mitt's experience of having a charmed life, one protected from most adversity by the privilege of his station at birth.

I wonder if that was a fleeting thought for anyone else.

we tend to hold onto the one's that have significant meaning in life and it is quite possible as the President seeks guidance to lead us in the future, he looks to the incredible adversity he has overcome personally in the past and knows extremely well that he can achieve it in the future regardless of the Republican hurdles.

Character is built through troubled roads indeed.

I doubt Mitt has ever had to even balance his own personal checkbook or count pennies and dimes until the next paycheck or worry about having to pay off student loans - ever. That arithmetic escapes him. In so many ways.

I think the idea resonates with most people on a subconscious level, at least, even when the address is directed to a different "object."

But yes, when I consciously compare the two men, this is a subject I consider.
