Here is a breakdown of average daily COVID-19 deaths and COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 people over the last seven days in all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. Yet, right wing media will continue to celebrate states like Florida and Missississippi as doing a great job in responding to COVID. Indeed, the failure to take measures to protect themselves will be celebrated as evidence of belief in the after life.

(17,378 posts)What is amazing is that red states should be doing way better the blue states, since densely populated blue states with California and New York were hit first when Trump was insisting that COVID-19 would just go away by summer and when there was no vaccine, and when it was not clear how to treat COVID. Red states should have had the benefit of experience. Instead, rather than learn from the mistakes of the past, red states almost appear to be trying to exceed the early death tolls of blue states.

Since the pandemic began, there have been about as many deaths as a function of population in blue states as in red states. But thats only because of the big increase in red-state deaths recently, especially in Florida, which in the past three months has tallied 327 deaths per million residents. Since May 1, 2020, there have consistently been more deaths in red states as a function of population than blue states since last summer.
Cookes defense was largely centered on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who has fought hard against mask mandates and has pinned his reelection bid (and potential 2024 presidential candidacy) on rejecting containment measures. But if we look at deaths as a function of state leadership which party holds the governors seat red states actually perform worse than on the 2020 presidential-vote metric.
Since May of this year, more than half of the deaths from the coronavirus have been in states that voted for Donald Trump. There have been 239 deaths per million among red-state residents, compared with 150 per million in blue states. Those numbers are roughly the same when looking at the party holding the governors mansion.
