If behavior changes after the hospitals fill up and the impact of the pandemic is obvious, its already too late to avoid a high number of deaths," stated the studys lead author and professor of medicine Dr. Elvin Geng. "A pandemic is like a big ship; it takes time to change course. But as the virus ramped up, early social distancing policies in St. Louis mitigated it just before it really exploded.
The study, published Wednesday in JAMA Network Open, demonstrates the importance of implementing local public health policies during the critical window at the onset of a new epidemic, researchers say.

(5,637 posts)Newsom deserves the credit, even if he stupidly went to a restaurant months later. First line credit goes to public health directors in several Bay Area counties.

(21,859 posts)all like these other areas of the Country that seemed to protest every thing done to tamper the spread of COVID.
Unfortunately, the County didn't shut down at the same time that the city of STLMO did, but it did eventually shut down...the only reason I mentioned this was that we were getting people from infected areas (rural parts of MO) to uninfected areas (the City). That's why it is so critical to do at least a regional or nationwide shut down, all at once, in order to be truly effective, otherwise, you'll have some bloke coming from the rabidly infected southern or western states/parts of MO, and starting the whole thing again.
The powers that be also have mentioned that we're in line again, another shut down or the likes...I hope not, but will support anything is needed. Masks are the rule of the day when and if you ever go shopping in STLMO, as well as social distancing, reduced operating hours at retail outlets, distance deliveries (deliver on porch, ring doorbell, go away). Many have also curtailed their trips to the stores, ordering deliveries instead, etc., thus, reducing (in theory) contact w/ the outside world.
Be safe all.
