Thats whats happening.
We hear all the time about how news is reported and objectivity, but the objective, unarguable truth is that the GOP has used a system design for white, wealthy men to reign over everyone to deny earned, natural rights and quickly dismantle liberal democracy which rejects them.
When we read about this it will be framed as Texas limits access in a move that concerns some. Thats a viewpoint born from a politics-as-a-sport perspective championed by a media thats skewed to wealthy, white men benefited from these attacks. The truth is much uglier.
What were experiencing is an intentional dismantling of open society and liberal democracy, an attack on vulnerable populations, and a movement on the Right that recognizes its not particularly capable of winning elections.
Thats not overreacting. Its life here right now.

(82,849 posts)The days of "majority rules" were being measured by Republicans and marked for termination. Lately I've heard the Twitter ranters going on and on about 50 million or 70 million Americans not liking this or that, but what's never mentioned is that far more than whatever number they cite are in favor of this or that. They're in the minority, but they still expect to get their way. Aided and abetted by the likes of Sen. Sinema or Sen. Manchin, they're not totally wrong. And the popular media give their crackpot, undemocratic notions a full, respectful hearing.

(16,646 posts)The original system was intended to protect the minority from the "tyranny of the majority". Of course this minority and majority was land owning white men. But it was never intended that a minority of white men should govern over a majority of white men. As time went forward new states were created with the intent to preserve the rule of the white males who were slave owners. This created a condition where the power to govern was slowly being given over to a minority of white men over the majority of white men.
Ultimately this lead to a war and the authority of the majority of white men being restored. However, soon after this, nonwhite men started getting voting rights. There was a struggle over this, including including white women being given the power to vote. Ultimately, there was a significant expansion of voting rights for all adults. However, the structure of states created to maintain the power of the minority of white men still existed. Nothing changed after the war about the structure, number, or composition of those states. The voting rights act did much to blunt this for decades. None the less, the white minority continued to exert outsized influence and control over the system.
Now, between Citizens United, and the elimination of the voting rights act, the white minority has once again found a way to take control of much of governing. It is becoming hard to see how the majority can once again gain control of governing without another violent conflict. To some degree it has already begun.

(36,225 posts)Do our dem leaders recognize this? Gov Newsom does. Does Senator Feinstein? I don't think so. What about the dem senators who still support the filibuster, & it's not just Mansion & Sinema. A bunch of them are hiding behind those two, happy to let them take the heat. Even Biden has expressed reluctance to get rid of it. Where is the DOJ on the shit show going on in AZ? A strongly worded letter back in June. Really? That's all? The voting machines have to be scrapped. Certainly there were some federal election laws broken during that circus. ???
We wonder why these people think they can get away with it. It's because we let them.

(20,864 posts)a Democrat will never ever win my district because of gerrymandering. The past 10 years more people in Pa. have voted for the Democratic candidates but the GQP continues to gain more seats. I hear talk of we need to GOTV and so does the GQP hear that and they haven't even put the finishing touches on its new gerrymandering. S1 will make redistricting fair.
