Joe Rogan's CV-19 positive status is a unique moment. He seems to be the incarnation of every Republican false hope, exaggerated claim, misguided effort, and downplayed risk in one tattooed package.
Relatively young...check
No risk factors that I am aware of...check
Taking Z-Pak...check
Taking Ivermectin...check
Taking vitamins...check
Promoted these alternatives on his show while brushing aside the merits of vaccines...check
If Rogan succumbs to CV-19, it could be the final wake-up call to those with aligned beliefs.
If Rogan pulls through, he will instead be just another example alternative "thinkers" can point to. As we know, random anecdotal information that comes from within the trusted conservative network can hold more weight to insiders than rigorous studies from "outsider" scientists.
While I have no reason to wish the man harm, could his untimely demise actually steer the course of the pandemic and ultimately save lives?

(792 posts)He may relapse, or whatever the term is. I'm not inclined to hope for it but the facts are it can happen. He's relatively young and healthy.
Like any celebrity case everyone watches it more closely and reads more into it than they should. This goes all the way back to Magic Johnson and AIDS (at least that's how far back it goes in my lifetime). Rogan's outcome will shift some minds--more if the ivermectin does something gruesome to him.
We should all remember too that even before the vaccine a lot of people beat COVID, Survival rate was even well above 50% from what I've heard.
Zeitghost
(3,856 posts)Unless you're self medicating and can't do basic math on pet meds, Ivermectin is perfectly safe and widely used humans all the time. It's not going to do anything gruesome.
The calculated survival rate on COVID is 99%+, actual is even higher. So yeah, he'll most likely be okay.
cadoman
(792 posts)Basically if you don't use it how AMA/CDC/FDA prescribe you run a very, very high risk of a toxic reaction and dying. Poison control centers are being flooded with calls about it (over a five-fold increase).
The toxic affects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Overdoses are associated with hypotension and neurologic effects such as decreased consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, coma, and death.
We are going to see a five fold or much higher increase in ivermectin harm if we don't start suppressing misinformation about it. It could literally turn from a COVID pandemic of the unvaccinated into a COVID and ivermectin mis-use pandemic of the unvaccinated.
Zeitghost
(3,856 posts)Ivermectin, when prescribed by a Dr in human appropriate doses is perfectly safe and has been used worldwide with great success with treating parasites.
Ms. Toad
(34,060 posts)is toxic.
Different diseases require different doses, so it isn't the body injesting it, it bug being targeted (COVID v. parasites)
Zeitghost
(3,856 posts)Ivermectin prescribed, for whatever reason, by a Doc. If you are taking Ivermectin under the care and guidance of a medical professional, it is a remarkably safe drug to take.
Whether those doses are effective against COVID is another matter altogether. India and other countries appear to have widely used it safely and possibly effectively. Ongoing trials will give us a better idea.
*Disclaimer for those who continue to report me*
I am not advocating the use of Ivermectin for COVID, nor am I suggesting it is a better option than a vaccine, it quite clearly is not. I am only pointing out that is a safe and widely used medicine that is used in humans around the world on a regular basis.
Ms. Toad
(34,060 posts)are not prescribing it at the levels which are proven to be safe. They are prescribing it at significantly higher levels than used to treat parasites.
While I would agree that those doctors should not be prescribing medicine Ivermectin at levels which are unsafe, the reality is that they are.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)It leads people to believe every person who contracts COVID has a 99% chance of surviving - and that isn't true. It's not equal across the board.
The reality is that your odds of surviving depend on a lot of things: including your age, weight and preexisting conditions status.
I'm not necessarily calling you out but I think the narrative that you have a 99% chance of surviving has proven extremely dangerous, as it's led to people believing they, too, will have a 99% chance of surviving COVID if they get it.
But no. Not at all. If you're a 72 year old obese man with diabetes and COPD, I guarantee your chances of surviving COVID is far less than 99% if you're not vaccinated.
Joe Rogan, though? You're right. He probably has a much better chance.
Zeitghost

As Americans still struggle to access coronavirus testing and receive prompt results, President Donald Trump is being screened for the disease as many as multiple times a day, his top spokesperson acknowledged Tuesday.
As Ive made clear from this podium, the president is the most tested man in America, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters. Hes tested more than anyone, multiple times a day, and we believe that hes acting appropriately.

(6,278 posts)when the source is McEnany it almost makes me think he wasn't tested often!
I love the Trumpian superlatives... he wasn't just being tested, he was "the most tested man in America!"
At that stage it was probably something to rub in the faces of people who couldn't get a test at all.
Anyway, he is a notorious germophobe, so it's hard to imagine he didn't get tested frequently

(3,856 posts)Can have different uses outside their common or primary use. Azithromycin has anti-viral properties.
"It has been shown that AZM has significant antiviral properties. In contrast with CQ or HCQ, its antiviral activity has been shown in vitro and/or in vivo on a large panel of viruses: Ebola, Zika, respiratory syncytial virus, influenzae H1N1 virus, enterovirus, and rhinovirus [413]. Its activity against respiratory syncytial virus has been demonstrated in a randomized study in infants [10]. Azithromycin exhibited a synergistic antiviral effect against SARS-CoV-2 when combined with HCQ both in vitro [11] and in a clinical setting [13]. Of note, the pre-print version of the article from Andreani et al. [14] also reported a significant antiviral effect of AZM alone on SARS-CoV-2. The mechanisms of the antiviral effect of AZM support a large-spectrum antiviral activity. Azithromycin appears to decrease the virus entry into cells [2, 8]. In addition, it can enhance the immune response against viruses by several actions. Azithromycin up-regulates the production of type I and III interferons (especially interferon-β and interferon-λ , and genes involved in virus recognition such as MDA5 and RIG-I [7, 12, 13, 15, 16]. These mechanisms are universally involved in the innate response against infectious agents, and potentially against SARS-CoV-2."

I am not advocating for the use of Azithromycin as a widespread cure for COVID or suggesting it is better than a vaccine. I am simply pointing out that it is useful against some virii and *MAY* help some with COVID19.

(15,315 posts)https://www.healthline.com/health-news/what-its-like-to-survive-covid-19
While the majority of COVID-19 cases are mild, even asymptomatic and mild infections can be a problem.
Before you even know you have an infection, odds are youve spread the virus to three other people though, sometimes that number can be less or much higher.
If you spread it to someone 65 or older, estimates suggest theres at least a 10 percent chance theyll die.
While it's true, generally speaking, that most people won't get what is classified as a severe case, that doesn't mean they get what is the equivalent of a cold. It also ignores the segments of the population that are vulnerable. We ARE supposed to care about them, remember?

Plus the ivermectin he took was probably actually prescribed for him and intended for human usage, not an animal dosage.
