One of the strangest things is that the GOP never really wanted to stop abortions.

Like guns it was the perfect “one issue” voter thing. All they had to do was say that they were Pro-Life and/or for gun rights (they’ve PC’ed that into 2A Rights) and huge swaths of people were taken care of. No time or resources needed to get their vote. Just put a big check mark next to all of them.

What happened was that true believers started getting elected especially at the local and state level. They were in a mission and they were going to stop abortion. When someone came up with the building or zoning code angle that’s when I knew the GOP had lost control of this issue.

This has all really happened in the last 20 years. The GOP has them a perfect little game going but they were too successful with their own people.

is that, once they have outlawed abortion, they don't have that red flag issue to wave in front of their voters.

And they will have to face a whole lot of pissed off pro-choice folks.

Thank you for completing my thought.

Really this is like the white supremists - new blood doesn’t want to just sit around and talk they want action! The same could be said of the insurrectionists. They were there to create their legend.

Catholics had traditionally voted democratic and they calculated they only needed about 7% of the Catholic vote to get a majority.

Yes that makes sense. Plus all those people donate money like they are at church. It adds up.

A large majority of the Catholic vote has been firmly on the Democratic side especially since JFK. The fact that the Republicans really got the evangelicals as fanatics was kind of a bonus from what they were trying to do to begin with.

they are not doing these things because of a moral belief in them. They are doing it to get people to keep voting for them. So the can stay in office and steal everything they can get their hands on. That is all it is about. If they could get the same result by making abortion mandatory they would do it.
