Witnesses, including Republicans in the Congress, need to answer the questions. Are they supportive of these extremists that are calling for the overthrow of our government? Do they still believe that the 2020 election was stolen? Have they found any evidence of massive fraud?
If not, they need to address the citizens of this country. Their silence is complicity. We need Americans to stand up for our democracy, especially those in the Congress of the United States.
That is why the Committee needs to move quickly. These people refuse to voluntarily step forward and tell the truth. They must be forced to speak out, under oath, for the benefit of the nation.
Let them challenge it in the Courts. Just get the information out to the public.

(30,613 posts)I don't need to hear the opinions of the Coup Caucus. I want to hear who they talked to, what was said, who gave terrorists tours, and who is funding them.

(110,950 posts)...they believed the election was stolen and there was massive fraud. Whatever happened was justified. At the present time, we can only assume they are supportive of over-throwing this government.

Hey, there's another insurrection rally coming up in a couple of weeks so it doesn't appear to me that people are afraid of being held accountable. With that said, I have more faith in what the House and Speaker Pelosi are doing.
What needs to move with immediate emergency is passage of S1, or are we resigned to the notion that nothing can be done?

(110,950 posts)...and I say, the sooner the better! Democrats need a judicial ruling in their favor. It woud go a long way to putting justice back on the track.

(26,697 posts)Trying to force another congressman to testify might take quite some time to adjudicate. And there's no guarantee that they would win.

(20,873 posts)There is no guarantee that Dems would win forcing a Congressperson to testify but I know this for a fact, if they don't try no Congressperson is going to volunteer.

(26,697 posts)If they're inside the previous administration, there's that hurdle to overcome. If they're just citizens who were involved in the riot... they're going to demand immunity that you probably won't want to give them.
The problem here is that Congress' investigatory powers are better aligned with planning for legislation (where both sides usually have an incentive to testify so that they can influence that legislation) and not so well aligned with criminal investigations. They often hurt them more than they help. And the other side obviously believes that we're out to craft a political narrative - and thus have no incentive to comply.
