by Ang Gri Uoman
A small group of Republican state legislators in Texas have introduced a bill that would rename the state. Speaking to a group of reporters, state Senator Ima Nidyut said, "Texas should honor their bounty program on abortion aiders by renaming the state to Gilead, the famous fictional place in the novel, "The Handmaid's Tale," and also of Biblical fame as the place where Balm was created." We can and should give our state a name that will always be remembered.
It is unclear whether the idiot majority in the Texas State Legislature will follow through and make this bill the law, but precedent for such inexplicable bills certainly exists.

(10,429 posts)except that they're not satisfied with just TX. They'll wait until they've taken over the country and rename the US then.

(23,975 posts)I grew up in western upstate NY. Texas was indeed "a whole other country" for an Easterner like me.
I felt more at home in Japan during my second assignment.

(32,634 posts)In "The Handmaid's Tale" it was an apocalyptic virus that rendered 99% of the women infertile but otherwise healthy. So the few lucky women who weren't affected by the virus, got turned into baby-slaves (called Handmaids) for the rich and powerful men who commanded them to have their babies. The women who weren't Handmaids were complicit in this arrangement, and that's what made the whole thing insidious.
The Texas law doesn't distinguish, it just makes all women suspects-until-proven-otherwise. The only way to win is for every woman of child-bearing age to just pack up and leave the state.

(3,056 posts)It's happening a lot lately. You realize immediately this has got to be satire, but something at the back of your brain is saying, "Y'know, it is Texas. (Or Florida. Or Georgia) It's totally possible."

Here are some questions? Where is corporate Texas? Corporations spoke out in Georgia about legislation there - voting I think it was. Why are Texas corporations remaining silent? Do they support this bill? Do they also despise their women employees? Do they believe that this new law will attract women to positions in their companies? Or are they hoping it attracts the "right" people, as in evangelical christians or older women who are beyond child-bearing years? Or maybe they're hoping for Muslim women?
Next question. By not taking up the case, did the liberal members of the Supreme Court share the views of their fascist counterparts? Or are they waiting for specific lawsuits on specific law to make their way to the Court? Or, a someone noted on another post, was the fix in with the court from the outset, whether via collusion or with a wing and a nod?

(2,787 posts)Texistan caters to corporations. They can literally get away with murder here. It's not just a heaven as far as a tax-haven for them, they can store all kinds of munitions and other flammable, dangerous material right in the heart of downtowns with no legal issues. Look at the chemical plants in the middle of neighborhoods along the coasts!
I think what you're seeing is what we women have been pointing out for years. When it comes to discrimination, we're the silent discrimination. It's been going this way for years. I think it's time now for the allies we've helped to come to our aid, and stand strong with us. YMMV, I guess.
Companies don't necessarily want older women past childbearing years. That gets them into menopausal and postmenopausal women. Each of those phases has it's own set of issues with lack of hormones and symptoms. I'd almost bet there are as many women using healthcare to try to beat back the symptoms of menopause as there are perimenopausal women. And then you get into issues with possible brittle bones, etc. that are due to the lack of female hormones.
Muslim women? Where did THAT come from? They're still women, with all the healthcare and reproduction needs and rights of any other woman!? In addition, Islamic anything in Texas would probably put them behind the 8-ball in popularity.

(16,389 posts)Not a good idea. "Don't mess with Gilead" just doesn't have the same ring as "Don't mess with Texas."
"Deep in the Heart of Gilead"... "The Yellow Rose of Gilead"... "All My Exes Live in Gilead".... I dont think so.
