The topography of Northern NJ consists of a series of parallel ridges between the Hudson and Delaware Rivers. The flat-bottomed valleys between the ridges drain through gaps into the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers to Newark Bay or into the Raritan River to Lower New York Bay.

The gaps restrict water flow, backing up floods into the valleys. The Great Falls in Patterson is an example. On the other hand, it was an early source of industrial water power leading to early development of the surrounding area.
