Is it time to move everyone out of New York?

Two major storm events in a relatively short time period. Subways and streets have flooded. NYC is becoming uninhabitable. Maybe New Yorkers need to think about moving permanently to other parts of the country that are less prone to catastrophic weather events. (Of course I don't really think anyone should leave New York.)

Those of us that live in New Orleans were told, on DU, just after Hurricane Ida made landfall that we need to move since our city is becoming "uninhabitable." Right. Because it's so easy to pick your entire life up and just move somewhere else where you have no family, no friends, no job, no connections, nothing.

Just sell your house and buy a new one somewhere across the country in a crazy real estate market, right? Easy peasy!

Blow off your siblings and your cousins and all your other extended family members who are your main support system, cuz who needs family, right? Got an elderly mother nearby who needs your assistance? Too bad Mom, you're on your own. I was told I need to leave my "uninhabitable" city!

I can easily find another job in the niche market that I work in, right? Should be no problem during a pandemic. Or take a pay cut and start over in another market? Piece of cake! I can just live in a box. And I'm sure it will be easy to find another job since I'm over 50. Companies are just lining up to hire older workers and pay them what they're worth. No problem!

Own a business in New Orleans that's taken years to make profitable? Just walk away from it, right?

I've used the 'sarcasm' smilie twice to emphasize how ridiculous and insensitive it is to tell people on DU, right after a catastrophic event, to abandon everything they know and love. Of course I don't think anyone should leave New York. It's a fantastic place and I fully understand why people love living there. And I sincerely hope everyone is safe.

Most of you on DU have been very kind and supportive to those of us along the Gulf Coast after Ida wrecked our lives and I want to thank you for showing us how much you care. Your kind words mean a lot.

It's too bad that a handful of people thought it was okay to take shots at those of us who are traumatized and suffering and just trying to piece our lives together again. Shame on the person who posted that thread telling us to leave our beloved city, and the others that agreed with the OP.

There is no part of this country that is impervious to weather catastrophes, as we just saw in the northeast. As we've seen with the drought and fires in the west. Flash flooding as the hurricane made its way across the country.

Don't think it can't happen to you. And maybe keep your nasty thoughts to yourself after a disaster and resist the urge to take a swipe at people when they're down.

It’s not easy to relocate and besides, pretty much everywhere now will be open to extreme weather events. It’s the nature of the climate change we’re going through.

It's an 800% improvement over Katrina...

Sure, it takes time to recover, but vehicles were able to get in and start clean up on Monday...
Big difference...huge difference....
Sure it's sucky without electricity, but it is being restored....

ETA: The power outage could have happened in any city with winds of Ida's strength......A tornado could touch down in a Midwest city and take out a transmission tower.

Only an idiot would suggest such things, and only the trolliest of them would do so during such a crisis.

to leave California. Someone on DU mentioned how lucky they were to live in Ohio. Seemingly, Ohio is paradise on earth with no climate change difficulties. Who knew.
