I hope they call it the Abbott Law.He just shot himself and all Pres. ambitions in the leg.
The House speaker said shes responding to the Supreme Courts cowardly, dark-of-night decision decision to greenlight Texas extreme anti-abortion law.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced Thursday that she plans to bring up legislation that would codify Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that protects the right to choose to have an abortion, as soon as the House returns from recess this month.
Upon our return, the House will bring up Congresswoman Judy Chus Womens Health Protection Act to enshrine into law reproductive health care for all women across America, Pelosi said in a statement.
Her announcement comes a day after the U.S. Supreme Court allowed an extreme Texas law to go into effect that criminalizes abortion at six weeks and deputizes citizens to enforce the ban.
The House speaker railed against the Supreme Courts decision, saying its cowardly, dark-of-night decision to let the Texas law take effect delivers catastrophe to women in Texas, particularly women of color and women from low-income communities.

you that # among women is even higher. How many republican women have had abortions or knew
somebody that did. As for what the Evangelical Talliban Christians think? Fuck 'em they are gone
as per their votes anyway. They can all move to the southern half of Missouri, Arkansas*, Oklahoma,

What would have come of the Civil Rights movement if the prevailing sentiment had been, "Sounds nice, but we'll never defeat racism"?
That era's hard-won victories for civil rights, and for women's rights, are not final. The struggle continues. We shall overcome.

(32,984 posts)is that more realistic? Sinema and Manchin have killed the idea of eliminating or changing the Filibuster IN THIS CONGRESS.

Meanwhile Biden needs to expand the size of Supreme Court now -- not wait for some endless study to be done. Women will be dying right away or forced to give birth to children they don't want, and in some cases may not even be able to safely carry to term.

It once might have seemed practical and realistic for Republicans to shrug and say, "What's the use? We'll never undo Roe v. Wade." But now, instead, they are on the cusp of doing exactly that.
Madame Speaker is playing for all of the marbles here, and I applaud her.

(32,345 posts)The Democratic Party has never been pro-abortion, but we do believe that every woman has the right to choose whether she will be a parent or not. Men have an easy choice, they can just walk away. This isn't about men's choices though.
Our party speaks up for those who can't speak for themselves, and in this case it's women. Not all women, but the poor, the unfortunate, the hopeless, those who lack good healthcare, and those who can't afford to give up their jobs to be a full-time parent. Roe v. Wade was about an unfortunate woman who was raped by several men, and none of them took responsibility for their despicable actions. So as a nation we've gone beyond that ruling, and it's time for federal laws to be passed. We need to make each woman's right to choose the law for everyone.
Whether you or I ever get an abortion is beside the point. It must be an available option for the women who do need it.

There's no good reason not to be "for" abortion - unless, of course, you think of an abortion as inherently a bad, shameful thing for a woman to do. I don't think that.

Of course it won't if the vote is never taken. In politics, if you want something, you have to put on your big britches and go get it. Sometimes you have to try more than once. It's certain that if you pout in a corner and say, "it can't be done," those words will be forever true.

(9,880 posts)Good political ads could turn this issue to Democrats favor. The Texas law is draconian because it forces women and girls to bear the babies of their rapistsoften young girls of school age having to drop out of school to take care of a child when she is just a child and too young even to work. Anti-abortionists would just say that the baby can be put up for adoption, but the focus should be on the physical and emotional trauma of a 12-year-old being forced to have a baby.
Other women who are harmed are women who are pregnant and learn they have cancer. The majority choose abortion so they can be treated for cancer and try for another pregnancy later, but Texas has now removed that option. Unless the abortion is an emergency procedure to save the life of the woman, it is now illegal. For example, removing the fetal cells from the fallopian tube would be legal as its an emergency under the law because if the fallopian tube bursts, the woman can bleed to death. In addition, the pregnancy is not viable from the beginning.
We need to focus on the human stories and abortion as a part of overall healthcare because thats exactly what it is. Abortion does save lives.
Liberty Belle
(9,528 posts)Women with severe mental health conditions who have to go off meds if they stay pregnant, and the safety of their children. Remember Andrea Yates, who was warned not to get pregnant due to post-partum severe depression? She had another child, went off the anti-psychotic meds, and drowned all of her children.
Now about women who can't get testing until the second trimester for severe genetic defects? Now she'll have to carry even a non-viable fetus to term, such as a fetus with no brain stem. I had a friend who learned at month 7 that all of the fetus's organs were growing outside the body; it could not possibly be saved.
What about a woman who was exposed to serious toxins early in her pregnancy that can cause serious birth defects and doesn't find out she's pregnant until too late? For instance, someone who experienced pesticide poisoning (as happened to me, though thankfully I wasn't pregnant).
What about poor women who simply cannot afford another baby?
Or one whose health (not life) will be threatened if she continues the pregnancy? I knew a woman who was hit by a bus, thrown into the air, came down face-first on the pavement and wound up in a coma; her parents had to choose whether to save her unborn baby or abort it so she could have surgery to rebuild her smashed-up face? No government should be making that decision.
I knew another woman who developed pre-eclampsia, a condition dangerous to the mother. She had a toddler at home.
All of these choices are difficult and should belong to the mother or if she's incapacitated, to whoever she's given her medical power of attorney.

We do need to make the right to an abortion the law of the land. What we don't need is inaccurate information being bandied about. Please stop claiming that Roe v. Wade was about rape. It wasn't.

(16,691 posts)How long? We have to stop letting rights depend on the vagaries of the personalities we vote into office. One generation supports humna, civil and women's rights and advances rights somewhat. The next generation doesn't support rights and peels what we have away.
How long do humans anywhere have to rely on a generous ruling class to get a taste of equality? The only things we have going for us is that people do get a taste, and they want more. And if the rights are peeled back, people miss them and want them back. So we go one step forward and one step back, over and over.
I'm glad Speaker Pelosi will bring a bill to the floor. Whatever it takes to slap down the repressive regressives, do it.

(518 posts)Possible legislative responses to Texas Senate Bill 8 (the anti-abortion law):
A federal law "No United States Court may entertain a lawsuit brought under Texas SB 8."
And a similar law passed in every state "No court of this State may entertain ....."
If federal courts and state courts outside Texas will not permit the lawsuits intended by SB8 the Texas law would eventually grind to a halt; its only environment being Texas courts, which would simplify the constitutional challenge.
