Fans in Hungary boo as England players take knee ahead of World Cup qualifi

Supporters in Hungary booed England players for taking the knee ahead of kick-off in Thursday night's World Cup qualifier.

Hungarian FA president Sandor Csanyi called on fans not to make any "racist, discriminatory or homophobic chants" but the gesture was still jeered.

Csanyi said: "It is also important that the team's unbeaten run so far in this FIFA qualifying campaign is not overshadowed by anything else and that the loud noises produced inside the arena is full of encouragement for our national team rather than containing any racist, discriminatory or homophobic chants, including discrimination against the Roma community."

The anti-racism gesture has been performed in English football for over a year. After the initial pause in football due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the death of George Floyd, Premier League and EFL players took the knee ahead of kick-off in every game.

That was collectively maintained in the Premier League throughout last season and it has also taken place pre-match in every game so far this season in the top flight.

The England national team also took the knee before kick-off in every Euro 2020 game.

This is a glorious goal. Rice wins the ball off Orban, and sets Grealish off down the left. Grealish draws a couple of red shirts, then slips Mount in on the overlap. Mount cuts back from the byline, finding Sterling six yards out. Sterling opens his body and sidefoots into the bottom right. What a delightful finish!
