After a Texas anti-abortion law took effect on Wednesday, Gov. Greg Abbott said Tesla CEO Elon Musk 'likes the social policies' in his state.
Abbott made the statement while responding to a question on CNBC about whether or not he's worried that major employers in Texas will respond negatively to the restrictive law.
Musk tweeted in response that he would "prefer to stay out of politics."
"In general, I believe government should rarely impose its will upon the people, and, when doing so, should aspire to maximize their cumulative happiness," he wrote.

(38,453 posts)That does not indicate he knows anything about "social policies". Also I have just lost some respect for
Musk...He really doesn't know enough to keep his big mouth shut...

(38,453 posts)oppose what Musk says..a buffoon.
....Other companies are coming out with "electric cars".
So, you wait for one of the other companies to come out with an electric car .

(18,644 posts)But I have a Tesla and I have to say that I feel it has many advantages over it's competition.
I bought it on the hope that the Full Self Driving version would be available soon. My reflexes aren't as quick as they used to be and I'm hoping a self driving car would be safer than driving myself as I get older. Musk said a couple of days ago that perhaps in 3 weeks the beta version will be released to the public. I've seen many videos of tests of the software and it's pretty astounding.
So disclaimer, I respect Musk on a technical level and I don't really know his views on social issues so that won't be an issue.

(18,644 posts)The current cars are not self driving and like all cars with radar cruise, they cannot sense an object that isn't moving. (Sounds weird but its the case.)
The new Tesla system that should be released in a few weeks is vision only. They stopped using radar altogether. It's been reworked completely and will definitely sense a stopped vehicle. It sees all parked cars, stopped delivery and trash trucks and can read car turn signals among a zillion other things. It actually builds a full 3d model of everything around the car 20 times a second and is constantly calculating the speed and trajectories of all moving objects to make sure the cars path won't intersect them.

(4,762 posts)It's designed to help you drive, but with the expectation that you will be fully alert and engaged with the car at all times - hands on the wheel, feet on the pedals, eyes forward. If you aren't capable of driving the car yourself, the car cannot be safely operated - full stop.
Please stop listening to Elon's marketing/blatant lies and edcuate yourself on the reality of autonomous vehicles (hint, you'll never own a self driving car, my 8-year-old niece may see them in her lifetime).

(4,590 posts)I don't know Musk's political views but in any case he has to rely on a relationship with Texas government since Space X is based there. Wish he had picked somewhere else but to launch space ships you want to be as close to the equator as you can so the choice of locations are probably only Texas or Florida.

(30,613 posts)Me. I have qualifications I know would fit in well. But I would never set foot in Texas. Not while Abattoir is in charge.

(81,637 posts)Tesla plan to sell electricity in Texas would cut out the 'middleman'
Published Sept. 1, 2021
By Jason Plautz
The Public Utility Commission of Texas has until November 15 to decide on Tesla's application to sell electricity in the state's deregulated market.
Tesla's application, originally filed on August 17, seeks to make subsidiary Tesla Energy Ventures a retail electric provider (REP) that could purchase electricity on the wholesale market and sell it to retail consumers. The company has also filed applications to build utility-scale Megapack battery storage facilities in Houston and near its new Gigafactory in Austin.
According to the filing, the new REP would target "existing customers that own Tesla products and market the retail offer to customers through the mobile application and Tesla website."

(33,575 posts)He strikes me as a person disinterested in humanity and in human rights.
He does depend on near or actual slave labor to dig cobalt for his batteries. One of the more recent of the many available discussions of the topic: The impact of Covid-19 on child labour in cobalt mines in the DRC.
If he doesn't give a shit about child slave labor, it's hard to imagine that he gives a shit about the human rights of women in the United States.
