(10,877 posts)The new poll, conducted among 1,706 Californians between Aug. 20 to Aug. 29, shows that 58% of likely voters plan to vote "no" on the first question (Shall Gavin Newsom be recalled?) while just 39% plan to vote "yes." Newsom, armed with an eight-to-one fundraising advantage, has dramatically increased voter outreach and engagement efforts over the course of the final month.

Kill the recall!
And...BTW...Change the California Constitution so that the "recalled" Governor can run to replace themselves!
If 49.9% of voters don't want to recall a Governor, those votes should be counted as affirmative votes for the sitting officer allowing them to retain the seat in a plurality.

(10,819 posts)I knew the numbers were going in Newsom's favor. If you read the preliminary forecasts indicating Newsom was on his last legs, the Republicans were more energized and Dems apathetic, the polls were neck to neck, yada, yada, you would have sworn this was done and delivered, a huge Republican victory in a deep blue state.
Not saying it's over, of course. The full vote will be tallied in the next two weeks. But the early vote counts coming in were a complete reversal of what was being pushed by the political media and pollsters.
Lots of psychological, political warfare going on. If it turns out Newsom wins with a big margin, I suspect the Repugs ramped up the hype deliberately to keep their voters in outrage mode, increase election distrust.
As for the pollsters? They really can't afford another whopping failure.

(9,998 posts)I originally was hoping it would be 65%-35%. I'll still be happy if Newsom comes in with 60% No votes.
Looks like it's shaping up to be a good outcome. Just got to keep the foot on the pedal for another 12 days.

It seems you can mark a candidate even after marking no on the recall.
I looked up other Democrat candidates just in case the yes won. I tend to vote for women when I can, so I looked up Holly L Baade. I found an interview in the latimes (paywall), and saw enough to eliminate her. "Do you believe Joe Biden was lawfully elected president?" Her answer, "No." Coincidentally, that's my answer to her.

Then there's the (male) leading democrat, Kevin Paffrath. He wants to fight the drought here by digging a pipeline to... the Mississippi river. Yes, across more than half the country. Over or through the Sierras & the Rockies. Not asking what the people adjacent to the river think about it. Considering when the people on Soucal want a pipeline from Norcal, the northerners object loudly, I can't image the big river residents would be happy about it. I'm not happy with him.

The other woman is Jacqueline McGowan. She didn't say anything objectional, and her main issue is pot. Good enough for me, lol

(359 posts)It would truly be an endless series of disasters if (r) took over governorship.
Democratic legislators need to change some laws so recalls are more like a real election
and someone with 20% vote can't take over.
