https://www.npr.org/2021/09/02/1033766935/manchin-democrats-pause-3-5-trillion-budget Sen. Joe Manchin has called on Democrats to take a "strategic pause" in advancing their historic $3.5 trillion budget plan, putting in peril President Biden's most ambitious effort to stabilize the U.S. economy and boost the middle class.
In an opinion piece published in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, the West Virginia senator criticized his party as being shortsighted and hypocritical in its pursuit of passing the multitrillion-dollar budget, which Democrats see as vital to tackling climate change, child care affordability and fair housing.
"The nation faces an unprecedented array of challenges and will inevitably encounter additional crises in the future," Manchin wrote. "Yet some in Congress have a strange belief there is an infinite supply of money to deal with any current or future crisis, and that spending trillions upon trillions will have no negative consequence for the future. I disagree."
Manchin wrote that because of the challenges posed by the nation's high inflation rate as well as the unpredictable nature of the pandemic particularly as it pertains to the rapidly emerging variants of the virus Democrats should not "rush" to use spending as a fix for the nation's current woes. Rather, lawmakers should take a longer-term view about how today's fiscal policy could impact future generations.
That Manchin fails to realize there will be no longer term outlook if we not only fail to pass the reconciliation bill, but also the vote rights bill, is a great tragedy

Now is the time to invest in things that give you a good return: subsidized early childhood daycare return on the dollar is $1.08. There is data on that. Return on investing in a greener economy will go to the younger generations. When people spend money in the US these days so much of it ends up in China that it doesn't overheat the economy. Supply chain restarting are what is causing the inflation these months.

(91,947 posts)It sure seems to me that Manchin is working overtime to try and make us a minority party in 2022
This is so depressing to me

We can either sit here and lose and pat ourselves on the backs for being the good guys, or we can learn to fight the enemy before that enemy destroys us. We have not been given the option to continue to be virtuous and not lose. The Republicans decide the playing field.

(18,744 posts)Manchin wants to gut some of the environmental legislation out of it to protect the WV fossil fuel industry that finances him.
He will play ball, but he's signaling he wants more than minor cuts to this.
And a reminder, this is $3.5T of goodness, even if it ends up being $2.5T of goodness, it will still be the most impactful piece of legislation since the New Deal.
