Fort Jackson Army sergeant convicted in assault of Black man sent to new duty station

A U.S. Army drill sergeant who was found guilty of assaulting a young Black man earlier this year, is moving to a different station, officials at the Army post in South Carolina said. On Friday, Fort Jackson spokesperson Leslie Ann Sully wrote in a statement that “Fort Jackson Commander Brig. Gen. Patrick R. Michaelis has taken appropriate action in response to the conduct of Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Pentland.

“Pentland has fulfilled his assignment obligation at Fort Jackson and is preparing to move to his next permanent duty station,” Michaelis said in the statement. “The Richland County trial is complete,” Michaelis said in the statement Friday. Late last month Pentland was convicted of third-degree misdemeanor assault.

The 42-year-old soldier was captured in a video in April shoving and berating Deandre Williams, a 22-year-old Black man. Pentland, who’s white, was filmed threatening the young man and telling him he was “in the wrong neighborhood” and that “I’m about to do something to you. You better start walking right now.”

“We are the nation’s Army, and we continue to value and strengthen our shared trust with our local communities.
Soldiers are trained to conduct themselves in a respectful manner and adhere to the Army values. They are also held accountable when they do not,” Michaelis said.

surrendering black soldiers in 1864. Pentland is a disgrace to the uniform and needs to lose rank, at a minimum.

assuming he enlisted at 18 he has 24 years in. The next time he goes to reenlist he will be forced to retire. The military is up or out and he won't be going up.
