Dewormer overdoses overwhelm Oklahoma hospitals

By PETER WADE

The rise in people using ivermectin, an anti-parasitic drug usually reserved for deworming horses or livestock, as a treatment or preventative for Covid-19 has emergency rooms “so backed up that gunshot victims were having hard times getting” access to health facilities, an emergency room doctor in Oklahoma said.

This week, Dr. Jason McElyea told KFOR the overdoses are causing backlogs in rural hospitals, leaving both beds and ambulance services scarce.

“The ERs are so backed up that gunshot victims were having hard times getting to facilities where they can get definitive care and be treated,” McElyea said.

“All of their ambulances are stuck at the hospital waiting for a bed to open so they can take the patient in and they don’t have any, that’s it,” said McElyea. “If there’s no ambulance to take the call, there’s no ambulance to come to the call” ...

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said Ivermectin, a drug that some tout as a cure for COVID-19, has developed a “weird cult following,” despite the fact that the science shows it doesn’t work ...

Call logs obtained by WLBT showed that 17 people had called the Mississippi Poison Control Center after taking the drug in the first 23 days of August ...

“In what randomized control trials we have of Ivermectin, it shows they don’t work. If we try one drug and it shows it doesn’t work, and we try one drug and it shows it works, I want to use the drug that works,” Dobbs added. “I’m not picking on folks for doing it or for doctors prescribing it... but the data’s not there.”

The Polk County Commission has drafted a letter to Gov. Ron DeSantis encouraging him to promote the drugs ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine as treatment options for COVID-19 — even though the federal Food and Drug Administration, one drug maker’s own website and local health officials warn the drugs shouldn’t be used to combat the virus.

The commission is expected to vote Tuesday on whether the letter should be sent. It praises DeSantis' leadership during the pandemic, questions why corporate medical providers are discouraging these "innocuous medications" and asks the governor to protect citizens' right to try different options ...

... Commissioner George Lindsey said sending such letter is "far outside the Board of County Commissioners' area of responsibility and expertise" ...

... the author of the letter, Commissioner Neil Combee, a former state representative ... also mentioned Pepcid AC on Friday ...

CBS News

An Arkansas doctor under investigation for prescribing an anti-parasite drug called ivermectin to jail detainees with COVID-19, even though federal health officials specifically warn against it, has said that those patients took the drug willingly. But several inmates at the Washington County jail say that is not the case — that they were given the pills with no indication of what they really were.

CBS News spoke with 29-year-old Edrick Floreal-Wooten over a video call from the jail on Friday. After testing positive for COVID-19 in August, he said he and other inmates went to “pill call” and were given several pills with the explanation that it would help them “get better.” He said he and others asked repeatedly what the pills were.

“They said they were vitamins, steroids and antibiotics,” Floreal-Wooten told CBS News ...

KENNEWICK -- The Ranch and Home store on Columbia Center Boulevard has seen a dramatic increase in interest for Ivermectin paste, meant to treat parasites in horses, due to misinformation that it can prevent and treat COVID.

Employees at the store say they might be out of the horse medicine until December. They also tell us they receive daily inquiries about the drug which is not FDA approved for human consumption.

The store has several signs near the Ivermectin display that clearly inform customers that this type of Ivermectin is not meant for human consumption.

One sign reads, "Does Ivermectin treat Covid-19? No. While there are approved uses for Ivermectin in people and animals, it is not approved for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19."

... Julie Smith, whose 51-year-old husband, Jeffrey Smith, was breathing only with aid of a ventilator earlier this month, won a temporary ruling from Butler County Common Pleas Judge Gregory Howard on Aug. 23 that UC West Chester must honor a Centerville doctor’s prescription and treat Jeffrey Smith with Ivermectin ...

... Oster did modify the Aug. 23 ruling to allow attending hospital physicians to discontinue Smith’s treatment with Ivermectin if they see any “life-threatening side effects” ...

“The order issued Monday, Aug. 23 is hereby modified to permit the defendant (the hospital) to cease administration of Ivermectin, at its discretion, if Mr. Smith’s treating physicians at West Chester Hospital determine that Mr. Smith is experiencing any life -hreatening side effects due to administration of Ivermectin,” Oster wrote ...

Julie Smith said she and her husband were not vaccinated and chose not to be because “it was an experimental vaccine and we did not feel confident about it” ...

So, if there is permitless open carry, and stand your ground, and a very real virus filling ER beds to the point gunshot wounds can not be treated, are we about to decriminalize murder?

McConnell STOLE two seats on the Supreme Court. Flat stole them.
I don't support term limits on a supreme court justice, but I do support 120 days to advise and consent, or they are approved, as another poster posted a day or so ago.

NOW is the time to GOTV for 2022, and protect ALL civil rights under attack, voting and personal autonomy, with Court Reform.
11 justices, and, frankly, I'd go for 13 justices, and some form of expanding the house via the Wyoming plan.

Empty acreage doesn't vote.

... According to the Iowa Poison Control Center, symptoms from an Ivermectin overdose include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and allergic reactions—including itching and hives. More severe symptoms range from low blood pressure to dizziness, problems with balance, seizures, coma, and even death.

“For people that maybe bring this as an option, we really strongly encourage people to consult with a physician before considering any unapproved treatment,” said Tammy Noble, a registered nurse and education coordinator for the Iowa Poison Control Center ...

12. No doctor should be prescribing ivermectin for COVID

Colorado State University Professor Brian Foy has been studying ivermectin for nearly a decade ...

The organ systems affected by these diseases and symptoms are completely different between these parasitic diseases and COVID-19. Also, the parasites causing these diseases are living, cell-based organisms and therefore much bigger and far more complex than viruses. Viruses like SARS-CoV-2 aren’t cells. They infect your own body’s cells and coopt the cells’ protein “machinery” to make more viruses.

Ivermectin was specifically designed to combat multicellular invertebrate organisms, things like parasitic worms and insects that can infest humans and other animals. There’s no scientific evidence that the class of natural, bacteria-derived chemicals that ivermectin is derived from evolved to target a virus.

Given the current lack of evidence of ivermectin’s effect against SARS-CoV-2, no doctor should be prescribing ivermectin to treat or prevent COVID-19. It’s not approved to treat humans for anything other than strongyloidiasis in the US ...

SPARTA, Wis. (WXOW) - The Monroe County Health Department joins other health organizations in warning against the use of Ivermectin in treating or preventing COVID-19.

A combination of flawed studies, irresponsible politicians, and misinformation campaigns have made a lot of people opt for unproven and potentially dangerous treatment. This cynical misinformation has got to stop ...

... demand for this anti-parasitic medication has skyrocketed. From an average of 4,600 weekly prescriptions in the US, demand has surged to over 88,000 in just one week in August ...

“When people get fixated on inappropriate recommendations, then they unfortunately don’t get vaccinated,” said Hawaii Lt. Gov. Josh Green (D), an emergency room doctor who blames conservative media for fanning unfounded hopes about ivermectin. “They don’t do the things that will actually help” ...

The connection between conservative media and ivermectin is unlikely to be a coincidence ...

... Republicans are much more likely to be anti-vaccines and pro-ivermectin, polls show. This would also explain why Republican states have the highest COVID-19 incidence and death rates.
