Actress Bette Midler called for women to refuse to have sex to protest Texas's recently enacted abortion law and suggested that Congress should guarantee abortion rights for women.
"I suggest that all women refuse to have sex with men until they are guaranteed the right to choose by Congress," Midler tweeted Thursday.

Texas's abortion law went into effect Wednesday. The Supreme Court voted 5-4 to deny an emergency request to block the law.
The measure effectively bans almost all abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is usually at six weeks of pregnancy. The legislation also allows private citizens to sue people who aid or perform abortions in violation of the law.

(58,785 posts)Just to indulge some general male-hating impulse? I don't hate my husband, who supports abortion and has always been on my side.
I do hate seeing Midler posting something so incredibly stupid and outrageously unjust. How could anyone not realize at her age that women who partner with extremist RW men AGREE with them? When these schmucks manage to get a first date with most women, it's only because they kept their mouths shut long enough.
Maybe it was a joke? Hope, hope?

(58,785 posts)watching the rage of newly "incelized" men joining already enraged hard-core misogynists. (In this fantasy, most would cave in to their women, sex as a commodity would be replaced with sex as pleasure, and they'd live with happily ever after. But not all.)
A certain little problem is what I already pointed out: Anti-abortion men have anti-abortion wives and girlfriends. For me, that makes it a dumb (as well as suspect) fantasy, rather than a humorous, pleasant one.
But, now that I'm on this again, it also occurs that those who just love the idea might possibly find the RW was helping spread it. Just the idea would make a great hostile RW narrative. Like the nonexistent manhating bra burners, not a single man would need to be turned out of bed for RW swiftboaters to turn LW "Lysicastratas" into a giant slur on not just Democrats but on the very idea of modern, empowered women.

Love you, Bette... but this doesn't help.

If I were with someone who did this, much less posted publicly about it, I wouldn't be with them for very long.

(8,925 posts)I know we're in a bubble and all, but honestly. If I'm in a relationship, and my partner decides, "You know, we can't have sex because of something people in Texas did," I'm going to be giving both my partner and that relationship some serious side eye.
Holding a healthy physical relationship hostage because of politics? I mean, you do you. Everyone will. But yikes. Hard pass. In my experience, the kinds of people who play these games usually aren't in great relationships to begin with.
If sex is a currency to use for bargaining to get what one wants within the relationship, two words: Couples therapy. Or just break up. Life's too fucking short.

(29 posts)I support a women's right to choose. That means when, where and why she chooses to have sex. If you don't, then no wonder they wouldn't want to be with you. And the men who created this law don't give two shi*** about women's health or rights. If they have the misfortune to be with a Neanderthal they are considered only a baby factory. Avoid Sex so no pregnancy, no problem.

(8,925 posts)Anyone should be able to choose when or where they have sex. I can also choose the kinds of relationships I'm in. No one's entitled to be in a relationship. Someone brings politics into the bedroom, I'm pretty much out. And if that kind of person doesn't want to be with me, that would be fantastic. It could be a mutual parting. In fact, I would love to know if they're that kind of person before even starting dating.

(4,333 posts)I've been "involuntarily celibate" for at least two decades, ladies and gentlemen, without an adequate explanation from my marital partner. I've asked nice and not so nice...I've tested lots of conceivable issues - NOPE! I've defended him against GOP abusive policies when "nothing personal, just business" was serial and afflicted that tender male ego.
Geesh, wanna make me out now as the feminine equivalent to an INCEL...unpleasant, unhygenic, shrill and nagging? Shall we discuss empathy, compassion for the aged male organ (his brain) without being called out as an enabler, not quite a worthy wife? Do you women think ewwwww...at your age, you still want/desire? Ain't dead yet, ladies! Beg for a discrete "OPEN" marriage? LOL - The fact that my assets are gone and my vehicle inoperable while his "depreciating used assets gets fixed on a "family values" austerity budget is, quite candidly, because it's all HIS - All I feel at 70+ is his embedded misogyny, power and control over the "little woman." Now I actually do feel like the most unattractive, incapable woman on earth! Because, he's so busy, busy, busy helping his aging woman around the house as HIS loving substitute for some heated affection--I should be grateful, no? YUP - A "always mad woman," an ineffective love addict, a nymphomaniac by his estimation, waking up each day WITH A NEW PURPOSE for living!
Meanwhile, my 40 quarters of labor outside the home over the years never brought balance or riches and my contributions to HIS support entitles me by law to stay just short of the benefits afforded the truly "poor." Talk about elder emotional and financial abuse...heck, alone I'd have the same and less - inadequate health care; low wage jobs, homelessness? TPTB say I cannot even be compelled to testify against this criminally faultless man. Only blue NY state recognizes this as a reason for divorce, cruel and unusual as it is, so now I'd be also be a gold-digger just for living maintenance. Help me, ladies, I want to be as expensive and high-maintenance to RW Christians and the GOP/GQP...as I can. I just don't see myself with much clout ($$) to do it well.

(2,375 posts)only those who don't agree with the law will do that. Those that do agree will gladly have sex with their male partner.
I apologize if this has already been mentioned. I'm kind of eager to respond.
