Portland City Council will consider an emergency resolution next week to ban future travel, goods and services from the state of Texas until the unconstitutional ban on abortion is withdrawn or overturned in court.

Mayor Wheeler announced today that the Portland City Council will vote on an emergency resolution next Wednesday, September 8th, with the intent to ban the Citys future procurement of goods and services from, and City employee business travel to, the state of Texas.
The ban will be in effect until the state of Texas withdraws its unconstitutional ban on abortion or until it is overturned in court. City legal counsel is currently evaluating the legal aspects of this proposed resolution. The Portland City Council stands unified in its belief that all people should have the right to choose if and when they carry a pregnancy and that the decisions they make are complex, difficult, and unique to their circumstances.
Nearly 50 years ago, the Supreme Court ruled to protect safe, legal abortion. Late Wednesday night, the Supreme Court declined to block a Texas law banning abortions after only 6 weeks of pregnancy. This 5-4 decision allows Texas to outlaw an estimated 85% of all abortion procedures in the state.
This law does not demonstrate concern for the health, safety, and well-being of those who may become pregnant. This law does not recognize or show respect for the human rights of those who may become pregnant. This law rewards private individuals for exercising surveillance and control over others bodies. It violates the separation of church and state. And, it will force people to carry pregnancies against their will.
We stand with Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Elena Kagan, Justice Stephen Breyer, and Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who fought to block this attack on the reproductive rights, freedom, and autonomy of people across the country.
We urge other leaders and elected bodies around the nation to join us in condemning the actions of the Texas state government.
Portland City Council stands with the people who may one day face difficult decisions about pregnancy, and we respect their right to make the best decision for themselves.

(5,122 posts)A lot of Texans are good people.
A ban on the state is going to hurt everyone in the state, not just the ones who deserve it.
Just saying".

Edited to add that I understand using drastic measures because this law is a travesty. A hell of a lot of Texans agree.

(19,201 posts)My guess would be the people of the state of Texas. Sure, not everyone voted for them, but that should make the people who didn't work harder to elect Democrats.
It's the same with any situation. The innocent are going to have to suffer right along with the offending morons until the situation is rectified. That's just the way it is.

(5,122 posts)When you boycott the whole state you harm those fighting on our side indiscriminately. You economically impact the very women you say you support.
I don't have the answer other than it needs a more focused approach.

(19,201 posts)What happens when we boycott anything? Innocent people are hurt right along with the guilty, but that's the price we pay for getting anything done in the country.
Would republicans think twice about hurting innocent people to get what they want? Hell no, they do it every damned day. Democrats have to stop playing nice, because when we play by two different sets of rules, Democrats get royally screwed.
Innocent people always get hurt when you try to exact change. Ask any Union member. What are the alternatives? Do nothing to anyone? Bad choice. Have some marches and send sternly worded letters? Also a big loser.
People are going to get hurt, it's inevitable. The best we can do is try keeping it short so people aren't hurt too badly.
Unless you have some other suggestions?

3. Visit Austin. It's awesome.
4. Anyone else?
How do we support Texans to overturn this law and elect Democrats to office locally and statewide?
You're right though, it's up to the voters.
Let's support them.

(6,186 posts)If you vote them out that will surely get their attention.
If businesses suffer because of boycotts that will get their attention.
If mega businesses were to leave the state that would get their attention.
If legislators find the women in their families getting sued with no penalties that would get their attention.
If female legislators who voted for this law get sued that will get their attention.
How would the sued individual prove that they are NOT pregnant? That would get their attention.
Why couldn't a woman who was a resident and voter in Texas who seeks an abortion out of state be sued?
These hateful jerks wrote and passed a law that is likely to turn and bite them on a$$.
Can't wait!!

(13,058 posts)The article states that "We stand with Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Elena Kagan, Justice Stephen Breyer, and Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who fought to block this attack on the reproductive rights, freedom, and autonomy of people across the country." But that isn't quite accurate. Those four justices mentioned voted to put the law on hold until such time as it can wind it's way through the courts. They did not vote to block it, they voted to suspend it. And the law does not attack the rights of people across the country. It only affects the rights of women exercising their abortion rights in Texas. It has no affect on women's rights in the rest of the country. It may encourage other red states to follow suit and adopt similar laws, but that hasn't happened yet.

(11,465 posts)And creates more problems. She says they are doing everything they can in Texas and the democrats there need our support.
She totally thinks the abortion thing is wrong but doesn't think punishing Texans where a lot are democrats is the answer, we need to punish the republicans who are doing this.
