(53,764 posts)Maybe next time there's a Dem gov. you can't beat in the regular election so you try a recall.

I feel that the often stated phrase that "republican enthusiasm" is greater than that of the Democrats is over-hyped. Polls of likely voters favor Newsom 58% to 34%.
Dems know Elder is another DeSantis out to ban masks and vaccines. And he's no Arnold.

(53,764 posts)There's no proof of that. It's just an easy talking point that's spread out there and lazy reporters keep repeating it.
If you don't believe actual polls that show likely voters favor Newsom 58% to 34%, and women voters favor Newsom 62% over anti-abortionist Elder, why do you believe some unproven statement that republicans are more motivated?
Where is that poll, where is that proven?
The final results are not in the bag but I'm willing to bet that on Sept. 15 Newsom will still be governor.

(3,213 posts)Even Joy Reid brought the subject up last night. But I deleted it since I'm sure someone will report me for being concerned.

(53,764 posts)even progressive journalists, repeat what is supposed to be accepted wisdom, but there's no proof that republicans are more motivated than Democrats on this.
Anyone can say that.
What seems more obvious is that Democrats are more motivated on this as Elder wants to ban masks, vaccines and women's rights and turn California into another Texas or Florida with covid spiking all over the place, POC votes being suppressed and abortions banned.

(149,583 posts)And Elder is sadly mistaken about President Biden's mental capacity. He outshines all the Republicans!
And thirdly, Dianne Feinstein is also just fine.
I think that covers it.
Dream on, you brass-plated idiot.

(58,785 posts)Polls say there's a huge gender gap, with 62% of women saying Newsome's doing a good job, and only 34% of men.
Who knows? Stretch as it seems, perhaps the title of the OP's at least partially right, that hostility toward the woman is powering the recall.

Last I checked CA has a super majority. They cant think beyond their pencil...better not say it

(26,727 posts)Knocking off the most powerful remaining Democratic governor - and specifically due to his Covid policies - would be quite the coup.
DF isnt exactly young, but the chances of dying in the next year arent all that high. She certainly wouldnt retire for Elder if she wouldnt do it for Newsome.

(3,427 posts)Let's say, for example, that 49 percent vote to keep, but 46 percent vote to remove (and 5 percent abstain from voting either way). Would Newsom still be removed in that scenario because he fell short of 50 percent? I'm not sure how it works.
That is the problem with recall in California. Gavin Newsome, as far as I know, has to get 51% of the vote to stay in office. So Newsome could lose the election with 49-50% of the vote while Larry Elder could win the election only 18% of the vote. Last I heard, Elder is the leading opponent, but is only polling at 18% of the vote.

(5,722 posts)But if you're a Californian, you still need to vote no.
Anyone who comes up to me and says "Oh, I didn't bother because I thought/knew it was in the bag" is going to regret it, regardless of the outcome of the recall.

Took Jerry Brown 8 years to clean up that mess.
